This WoW Midnight Season 2 beginner guide was checked in October 2026 against the 12.1.5 content update, which Blizzard scheduled for October 13, 2026. Season 2 itself began the week of August 18, one week after patch 12.1, Curse of Ula'tek, went live, so you are arriving at the mid-season point. That is a good time to start: the raid is fully open on every difficulty, catch-up systems are switched on, and plenty of other players are gearing alts alongside you.

Where the game is right now

Retail WoW is in the Midnight expansion. Max-level content is tuned for level 90, and the capital you will return to after every activity is Silvermoon City. Season 2 content consists of:

  • The Venomous Abyss, an eight-boss raid that ends with Ula'tek, plus a single instanced world boss ("Lair") called The Tidebound Grotto.
  • Eight Mythic+ dungeons: Altar of Fangs, Murder Row, Den of Nalorakk, The Blinding Vale, Voidscar Arena, Kings' Rest, Temple of Sethraliss and Ruby Life Pools.
  • Delves (short solo or small-group instances with a companion) and Prey (open-world hunts with three difficulties).
  • From 12.1.5: a one-boss raid (The Unbinding of Kith'ix), the Labyrinth of Kindo'jan (a nine-chamber mega Delve), Aqir Invasions in Eversong or Zul'Aman, and a new campaign chapter.

New here? Start with this

Three ideas explain almost everything about endgame.

Item level is your entry ticket. Every piece of gear sits on an upgrade track: Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero or Myth. Each track has six ranks, and you raise the rank with a currency called Mistcrests that drops from the same content that drops the gear.

The Great Vault is your weekly bonus. It stands in Silvermoon and offers up to nine choices each reset, three for raid bosses, three for Mythic+ dungeons and three for world content such as Delves and Prey. You pick one.

You do not need a group to begin. Delves, Prey, Lairs on World difficulty and Raid Finder all work without knowing anyone.

If the interface itself is new to you, The Comeback Kids' beginner video walks through the UI, talents, professions and the Silvermoon weeklies chapter by chapter. It was recorded in Season 1, so use it for the basics rather than for item levels.

Your first week, in order

SignsOfKelani's season-launch video runs through much the same list: weekly quests, sparks, the vault, Prey and coffer keys.

  1. Pick up the Silvermoon weeklies. According to Method's gearing guide, the weekly Apex Cache quests sit just outside the bank and your first two caches each week contain a piece of Veteran gear.
  2. Buy the renown gear. Four launch factions and the Season 2 faction each sell one Champion-track item at a set renown level (see the table below). In 12.1.5 your first Aqir Invasion each week awards an Aqir Research Token, which the catch-up vendor Matildeux Osril in Falconwing Square trades for a voucher worth a full renown level (2,500 reputation, or 1,250 for Zul'jarra's Forces).
  3. Run Delves and save your keys. Restored Coffer Keys open the bonus chest in a Bountiful Delve. You can make six per week, and Method's advice is not to spend them until you can clear Tier 8, where the chest holds Champion gear.
  4. Start Prey. Nightmare hunts drop Champion gear and you can do five a week. If you are behind, 12.1.5 adds a catch-up: below Journey rank 4 every hunt awards a full rank of progress.
  5. Do Mythic 0 dungeons. Blizzard lists them at item level 292 loot on a daily reset, and every boss can drop gear. Method warns that below roughly item level 286 you will struggle to be invited to groups, which is why steps 1 to 4 come first.
  6. See the raid. Raid Finder and Story Mode let you experience The Venomous Abyss, and the Lair on World difficulty lets you queue alone and fill a group automatically; Blizzard recommends item level 273 for it.

What your first Great Vault should look like

The vault rewards effort far above what the content itself drops, which is why even casual players should fill a few slots.

  • A Tier 8 Delve counts for a Hero-track item (item level 305) in the vault, and so does a Nightmare Prey hunt.
  • One, four and eight Mythic+ runs unlock the three dungeon slots. Runs at +10 or higher turn the reward into Myth track.
  • Two, four and six raid bosses unlock the raid slots. New in Season 2, the raid row pays out one difficulty higher than what you killed, so Normal bosses give a Hero-track choice.

For the full table of tracks and crests, see our Season 2 gearing guide.

Crafting, sparks and two unlocks worth doing early

Epic crafted gear needs a Spark of Tides, and you earn one per week from weekly quests. The simplest is Vereesa Windrunner's quest beside the Great Vault, which asks for 100 Fading Voidwhispers from dungeons, Delves, treasures and rares. Method notes crafted pieces reach item level 331 when made with the top-tier crests, so a crafted weapon is often a new character's biggest single upgrade. Method's spark guide adds that a character who never completed the Midnight World Tour quest from Lor'themar can still pick it up for an extra spark.

Two short quest chains save a lot of time later:

  • The Coiled Isle portal. Astalor Bloodsworn in Silvermoon offers Prey: A Slithering Threat. Finish one Nightmare hunt on the Coiled Isle and the follow-up opens a permanent portal, which beats flying across Zul'Aman every time you visit the raid.
  • Orin Straylight's research. Take In the Catalyst's Shadow from Decimus in Voidstorm, then Prismatic Potential from Orin near the Catalyst in Silvermoon. It asks for 10 Elementary Voidcore Shards, shared across your warband, and it is the gate for weekly bonus rolls and the 12.1.5 item upgrades. Orin's research runs on a weekly timer, so starting late costs real weeks.

Realistic goals for a first season

Mythic+ rating is the clearest ladder. Blizzard's Season 2 rewards are the title the Venomous at 1,500 rating and the Breath of Blight mount at 2,000 (Keystone Master). That mount is not an elite goal: Raider.IO's US data on October 12 showed 381,288 of 664,261 tracked characters at 2,000 or above, a little over 57 percent. Timing any dungeon at +10 also unlocks a teleport to it.

If dungeons are not for you, the Labyrinth of Kindo'jan gives Delve players something to chase. Method lists eleven difficulty levels, with level 1 recommended at item level 170, so you can walk in almost immediately.

For veterans

If you last played in The War Within or early Midnight, these are the changes that will catch you out.

  • Raid vault slots pay one difficulty up, and Mythic raid slots arrive fully upgraded. Heroic bosses now feed you Myth-track vault items.
  • Bonus rolls are back as Nebulous Voidcores. You can swap a vault item for one once you have three slots filled, and from the week of October 6 Orin sells a second one each week.
  • Health and enemy damage went up 25 percent at max level in 12.1. Blizzard's stated aim was less spiky damage, so healing feels different from Season 1.
  • Mythic 0 is on a daily lockout during the season, and Lairs replaced the old open-world boss.
  • Prey affixes were replaced in Season 2, and Blizzard's 12.1.5 notes say Afflicted and Tormented Souls can no longer be used mid-hunt.
  • Legion and Battle for Azeroth reputations become warband-wide in 12.1.5, which matters if you are finishing old collections on alts.
  • Keystone Myth returns at 3,600 rating with 12.1.5, well above the 3,000 needed for Keystone Legend.

One community tip from the official forums is worth repeating: take Orin's new 12.1.5 quest, Ancient Depths, Ancient Venom, as soon as it appears, because the follow-up that actually enables Ascendant Venomstone drops only unlocks at the next weekly reset.
