Most Midnight Season 2 mistakes are not about rotations. They are about the rules of the gearing systems, which Blizzard changed in 12.1 and layered again in 12.1.5. This checklist was put together in October 2026 for the 12.1.5 content update of October 13, and every item comes from Blizzard's notes or Method's guides. If you have played since launch, you will know half of these. The other half is the point.

New here? Start with this

A short glossary so the list makes sense:

  • Great Vault: your weekly pick of one extra item, in Silvermoon.
  • Mistcrests: the currency that upgrades gear along its track.
  • Nebulous Voidcore: a bonus roll, spent after a boss or dungeon for one extra piece of loot.
  • Ascendant Venomstones: new in 12.1.5; ten of them push a finished weapon, trinket or necklace past its normal maximum.
  • Orin Straylight: the NPC by the Catalyst in Silvermoon whose quests unlock the last two.

If you are brand new, our beginner guide is the better starting point. Come back here once you are running Tier 8 Delves or Heroic bosses.

Timers and unlocks

1. Starting Orin's research late. Orin works on weekly timers. Prismatic Potential needs 10 Elementary Voidcore Shards, shared across your warband, from Mythic+, Bountiful Delves or raid bosses. Only after his research finishes at a weekly reset does he sell the extra bonus roll. The same pattern repeats in 12.1.5: Ancient Depths, Ancient Venom appears the week of October 13 and Ascending with Venomstones the week of October 20. Every week you delay step one is a week added to step two.

2. Farming Venomstone sources before the unlock. The stones drop only after the second quest is done, which Method dates to October 20 in North America and October 21 in Europe. A forum guide also warns against opening Bountiful Coffers at Tier 11 before the chain is complete. That detail is unconfirmed, but it costs nothing to turn in the quest first.

3. Still flying to the Coiled Isle. The permanent portal comes from Astalor's Prey: A Slithering Threat chain and one Nightmare hunt on the island. With a second raid entrance down in the Underbelly of the Vaults of Atal'Utek, you will be making the trip more often.

Vault and bonus rolls

4. Ignoring the raid row's new maths. Since 12.1 a raid vault slot pays one difficulty above the bosses that filled it. Two Heroic bosses are a Myth 1/6 choice. Two Normal bosses are a Hero choice. Players who dropped raiding for keys years ago are skipping the cheapest Myth-track slot in the game.

5. Pushing keys for vault item level. Method's table shows the dungeon row gives Myth 1/6 from +10 upward and nothing better beyond that. Crests are the reason to go higher, and they stop improving at +12, which pays 16 Myth Mistcrests.

6. Taking a sidegrade from the vault. With three slots filled you can choose a Voidcore instead of an item. A roll on the boss or dungeon that drops your best trinket is usually worth more than a ring four item levels higher.

7. Rolling on the wrong content. A bonus roll pays at the vault item level for whatever you just did. Rolled after a +10 or a Heroic boss, that is Myth 1/6. Rolled lower, it is not. Items you win are removed from that source's bonus pool, so repeat rolls on one boss get more targeted.

8. Paying gold for Orin's roll. It costs 5,000 gold, 2,000 Voidlight Marl or 100 Veteran Mistcrests. Once your gear is past the Veteran track, those crests have little other use.

Petko's 12.1.5 summary video frames the patch around the same three levers: 344 items, extra bonus rolls and uncapped crests.

Upgrades and crafting

9. Ascending the wrong item. Method is explicit that an Ascended item can take no further upgrades, that stones only work on fully upgraded Hero or Myth items and maximum-quality Tidal crafted ones, and that 344 items from the last two Mythic bosses cannot be ascended at all. Ten stones is a real cost. Put the first set into the weapon or trinket you are certain you will keep.

10. Grinding crests into the cap. Each crest type has been capped weekly, and overflow arrives as the type below. Blizzard lifts the cap the week of October 20. If you are capped the week before, spend that time on vault slots and unlocks instead. A forum report from August also found that purchased crest bundles counted against the cap despite their tooltip; check before you buy one.

11. Crafting a new item to change an embellishment. You can recraft the same item with a different embellishment reagent. To strip one entirely, add a Lucky Keychain from the auction house in the optional reagent slot. Items that come pre-embellished cannot be changed, and you can still only wear two.

Solo systems

12. Wasting Delve and Prey value. Four habits to fix:

  • Do not spend Restored Coffer Keys below Tier 8. You only make six a week.
  • Use your Delver's Bounty in a Tier 8 or higher Delve before the final boss dies. That extra chest is the weekly Hero 1/6 item, and Method specifies the bounty has to be used before the boss is defeated.
  • Blizzard's 12.1.5 notes say Afflicted and Tormented Souls can no longer be used during a hunt, only between hunts. The Journey perks grant their bonus gear once per week per character, Champion from Afflicted and Hero from Tormented.
  • When a group summons Ral'kala, contribute your own Ossified Relics. Method notes your loot chance is much better if you do, and the first Journey rank adds a 50 percent bonus for contributors.

In 12.1.5 the Labyrinth changes the arithmetic for Delve players: three chambers count as one Delve for the vault, so a full run covers the whole world row.

For veterans

A few things that are easy to miss even if you raid every week.

Reset-day order of operations for Midnight Season 2 after 12.1.5
A reset-day routine built from the checklist above
  • Your missed kicks are visible now. Since 12.1, every class interrupt shows a "missed" visual and plays a different sound when the target was not casting. Blizzard added it so groups can tell when an interrupt was used. It also means everyone can see you pressing it on nothing.
  • The Cooldown Manager tracks more than spells. Trinkets, potions and racial abilities were added in 12.1, and you can ping your action bar or the manager to show teammates a cooldown's status. Healers' pings share their mana.
  • Crowd-control diminishing returns reset after 20 seconds, up from 16, since the start of PvP Season 2.
  • Health and enemy damage both rose 25 percent in 12.1. Health thresholds you memorised in Season 1 no longer apply.
  • Mythic 0 is a daily lockout and every boss can drop loot, which makes it a quiet way to target one dungeon item on an alt.
  • Catalyse early. Finishing a four-piece set unlocks the achievement that makes Catalyst charges drop from raids, keys and Delves, so Method recommends converting even a poor item to get there.
  • Keep your Venomcursed pieces. Each armor type has one new Kith'ix item that interacts with the Venomcursed gear from Ula'tek, and Method says owning more than one may improve the effect.
  • Dispel prompts are an option, not an addon. 12.1.5 adds an animated border on raid frames when a unit has something you can dispel.
