The Shield of Retribution Paladin build is the class's best all-rounder in Diablo IV Season 15, Season of Hell's Legacy, and this guide reflects patch 3.2.2 as checked in October 2026. Maxroll ranks it S tier overall, S for pushing and bossing, and S on its leveling list, which is rare for a single build. It is also one of the easier top builds to pilot, with one real drawback: you have to stand close and stand still.

New here? Start with this

The build throws Blessed Shield with the Shield of Retribution upgrade. Instead of a normal ranged throw, the shield becomes a slow, pulsing disk that deals damage based on your Thorns. Thorns is the stat that normally hurts enemies when they hit you; this build turns it into your attack.

That has a useful side effect for new players. Maxroll's leveling guide says your weapon damage does not matter, so you can ignore most item swaps while leveling and just stack Thorns, Life and whatever keeps you alive.

The basics:

  • Oath: Juggernaut, chosen at level 15. Shield of Retribution counts as a Juggernaut skill.
  • Clash is the opener. Its Punishment effect grants Thorns and Block; the leveling guide says to refresh it about every 5 seconds.
  • Until level 32 you use the Shield of Justice version of Blessed Shield, then swap as soon as Shield of Retribution unlocks.
  • Auras do the rest: Fanaticism for Weaken and Crit, Holy Light for Fortify and healing, Defiance against crowd control.

Stay near what you are killing. The upgrade shortens the shield's range, so this is a melee-distance build that happens to throw things.

Why it got better in Season 15

Blizzard's developer note for 3.2.1 says the Paladin had fallen behind in the late game, and the patch was built to lift the whole class. Four changes matter here:

  • The Paladin's core stat scalar rose from 1.25 to 1.625, meaning 1.625% damage per 10 Strength instead of 1.25%.
  • Shield of Retribution now scales the percentage of Thorns it deals with Skill Ranks, so ranks on gear became a damage stat.
  • The Juggernaut's Oath bonus went from 80% to 100%.
  • Razorplate's chance for boosted Thorns hits tripled from 10% to 30%, and the bonus range rose to 200-250%.

Two smaller notes: Damage over Time affixes no longer roll for Paladins, and X'Fal's Corroded Signet can no longer be equipped by the class.

Then the runewords arrived. Hysteria, who writes Maxroll's guide, describes the build with Enigma as going "from slow and clunky, to extremely fast and fun" in his showcase video. Enigma is a classic runeword chest that replaces Evade with the Sorcerer's Teleport.

Gear: what to chase and in what order

Seven items that define the build

Early Torment. Maxroll's advice is to gear for Maximum Life, Life on Hit and Life Regeneration first, because base damage is already high. Razorplate is the stand-in chest. The Ceh rune's wolves pair with Aspect of Dominance to cap Resolve and with Aspect of the Umbral to generate Faith.

The turning point: Ward of the White Dove. This Unique gives Blessed Shield a large multiplier and lowers its Faith cost, but only while you keep a buff alive by using another skill after every three shields. It drops from Duriel, who needs a Greater Lair Key.

Enigma. The recipe on Maxroll's secrets page is Jah + Ith + Ber with a white chest armor in the Horadric Cube. Paired with Tibault's Will, the guide says the resource buff reaches full uptime.

Mantle of the Grey is the bossing chest: more damage and bigger skill size, at the price of Enigma's speed. Swap between them depending on the job.

Leoric's Crown and Stone of Jordan come from the Prime Evil Capstone dungeons. Stone of Jordan adds a lot of toughness for a small damage loss, on one condition: Physical must be your highest resistance to get its damage bonus.

Maxroll's Mythic crafting priority is Ward of the White Dove, Blood-Mad Idol, Leoric's Crown, Ring of Starless Skies, Stone of Jordan, Tibault's Will, then Penitent Greaves. Remember you can wear only one Mythic made with the Cube's direct upgrade.

For charms, the guide moved on September 24 from the Righteous Will set to Phoba of Radiant Fire, because its 500% bonus has better uptime while clearing. You keep it running by applying Judgement with Holy Light Aura. On Lair and Pinnacle bosses it needs time to ramp, so Righteous Will remains the swap for boss farming.

Strengths and weaknesses

What it does well:

  • Strong at every stage. Maxroll lists it as S tier for leveling and S for endgame, with an easy hand-over between the two.
  • Area damage and bosses. Tight packs evaporate, and it is S on the bossing list.
  • Forgiving. wudijo's class ranking gives Paladin an A+ for ease of play and an S for group utility thanks to Auras.

Where it struggles:

  • Short range. Enemies that spread out or run waste your shields. The leveling guide flags small area coverage and a preference for stationary targets.
  • Immobile while dealing damage, and slow before Enigma. Werglia's video guide calls the build tanky with huge area damage but slow, and says he still prefers Blessed Hammer for fast farming.
  • Speedfarming is its weakest list. It is A tier there on Maxroll while builds like Auradin and Blessed Hammer sit in S.
  • Defences come late. wudijo's pre-season notes say Paladins have to work for power and defences, with Block and Damage Reduction arriving through late Paragon.

For veterans

  • Push setup. Hysteria's Tower run on SSF used the Ber rune for Crushing Blow, paired with Amn for a fast proc rate, to fix the build's slow boss kills. He dropped Condemn for Holy Light Aura, used Griswold's Opus for healing to offset Blood-Mad Idol's burn, and added the Kry rune to group enemies.
  • Speed setup. Replace Clash with Aegis so you never stop throwing shields, and in Torment 12 content swap Fortress for Condemn to pull packs together.
  • Block cap. Sources listed in the guide: Clash up to 38%, Aegis 42% at rank 15, the Castle, Shield Bearer and Beacon boards, and Aspect of Interdiction, which can give up to 90% with enough maximum Resolve.
  • Mythic Seal. Seal of the Diamond Mind adds two more Defiance Aura rites, 30% Damage Reduction and 55% Aura Potency. With the Iron Conviction charm set it is what makes Blood-Mad Idol comfortable to wear.
  • Hellfire Torch. The guide's most flexible roll is +1 to the Iron Conviction set.
  • Fists of Fate is only worth it as a Mythic.
  • Hardcore. Same build; trade main stat, Attack Speed and Crit rolls for Life, Armor and resistances, and play one difficulty lower than you could.

If you want a zoomier Paladin, Maxroll's Snail recommended Shield Charge for general play during the PTR and reported after launch that Auradin, Divine Lance and Fist of the Heavens all perform well. Shield of Retribution is the pick when you want one character that levels smoothly, kills bosses and can still push.
