This Diablo 4 Season 15 beginner guide covers Season of Hell's Legacy, which went live on September 15, 2026 with patch 3.2.1 and is now on patch 3.2.2. Everything here was checked in October 2026 against Blizzard's season blog and patch notes, Maxroll's guides and creator notes. If you are new, or coming back after the Lord of Hatred expansion, this is the order to do things in.
New here? Start with this
Diablo IV now has eight classes: Barbarian, Druid, Necromancer, Paladin, Rogue, Sorcerer, Spiritborn and Warlock. Pick the one whose playstyle you like. Respeccing costs gold, and you will spend dozens of hours with the character, so comfort matters more than tier lists on a first run.
Three choices on the creation screen matter:
- Seasonal realm, not Eternal. The season mechanic, the Season Rank rewards and most guides assume a Seasonal character.
- Softcore. Hardcore deletes the character on death. Maxroll's first-steps guide also warns against it on an unstable connection.
- Normal or Hard difficulty. Hard gives 75% more experience and gold than Normal, Expert 125% and Penitent 175%, but only if you still kill at the same speed. Since patch 3.2.1, Expert and Penitent unlock after the Prologue, so you can raise the difficulty later without redoing anything.
The level cap is 70. You earn one Skill Point per level from level 2, and Season Rank objectives add up to 14 more, for 83 in total according to Maxroll's leveling guides. Paragon and Torment difficulties start after 70.
What Season of Hell's Legacy adds
The season is Blizzard's 30th-anniversary tribute to the series. Deckard Cain's soul sends you after three dark wanderers, and the questline ends with fights against echoes of Diablo under Tristram Cathedral, Baal at Arreat Summit and Mephisto in the Durance of Hate. That gives you four things to learn:

- Splinters of Evil. After the questline you carry one Prime Evil's power. It fires on its own in combat and each Splinter modifies different endgame activities through its own reputation track.
- Soul Splinters. Seasonal gems for jewelry sockets. You can wear up to three, and each has a bonus and a drawback. Five of the same type and rarity combine into the next rarity in the Horadric Cube.
- Waking Nightmares. Recreated places from older Diablo games, in three sizes: multi-level Capstone dungeons, standard dungeons at fixed spots, and small pop-up portals in the open world.
- Rebirth and the Horadric Post. Rebirth turns an Eternal character into a level 1 Seasonal one, keeping class, name and appearance. The Post is a mailbox for rewards from Blizzard.

You do not have to pick the perfect Splinter early. Take the one tied to activities you already like, and change it later.
Picking a class and a leveling build
Maxroll's leveling tier list for Season 15 puts these builds in S tier: Dance of Knives Rogue, Frenzy Throw Barbarian, Barrage Rogue, Minion Necromancer, Blizzard Sorcerer, Shield of Retribution Paladin, Stinger Spiritborn and Rock Splitter Thorns Spiritborn. Minion Necromancer and Shield of Retribution Paladin are the gentlest of those: your minions or your Thorns do the work while you learn the game.
The Warlock is the newest class and one of the strongest at endgame, but creators flag its start as slow. In his pre-season class ranking, wudijo rated Warlock leveling a C and Rogue an S. If you want a Warlock, expect the build to wake up later.
The leveling route
If your account has finished the campaign once, skip it on new characters. If this is your very first character, play the campaign, including Lord of Hatred: finishing it opens War Plans with Tyrael in Temis and the Horadric Cube.

- Start the Seasonal questline right away to unlock the mechanic. Maxroll's speed leveling guide suggests pausing it once the mechanic is open and finishing after level 70.
- Run War Plans. A War Plan is a playlist of up to five activities with bonus rewards. Do the activities in the listed order; Blizzard's launch FAQ notes that doing them out of order gives no credit.
- Live in Helltides early. Kill, join events, and save your Aberrant Cinders to open chests just before the Helltide ends, because chest experience scales with your level.
- Add the Undercity at level 25. It is a timed dungeon, and its War Plans node Jade Epiphany adds experience orbs. Patch 3.2.1 doubled the orbs from that node.
- Do the class quest at level 15. It unlocks your class mechanic (level 25 for the Necromancer's Book of the Dead).
- Clear the Capstones as soon as you can. They have fixed difficulty. Maxroll lists Vault of the Crucible at a suggested level 30 and Hellish Descent at 60; the second one unlocks the Pit and the Tower.
Rhykker's Season 15 Ultimate Guide on YouTube opens with a fastest-leveling chapter and then walks through Splinters, runewords and powering up, if you prefer to see the route.
A few habits save real time. Stay out of town. Wear any upgrade you find. Put your best Legendary Aspects on the amulet and rings, because you replace those least often. Salvage Legendaries at the Blacksmith so their Aspects land in your Codex of Power. Patch 3.2.1 also made every Unique able to drop from level 1 on any difficulty.
One Season 15 trick is cheap enough for a first character: the classic runeword Stealth. Maxroll's secrets page gives the recipe as Tal + Eth with a white (normal quality) chest armor in the Horadric Cube, and its Blazing Scream guide uses it as a starter chest.
At level 70: the first evening of endgame
Finish Season Rank 1 through 4 first. Those ranks hand out the extra Skill Points, starter gear and Lair Boss keys. Then clear Pit level 10, which is where Maxroll's endgame guide places the start of Torment 1.

In early Torment, upgrade Rare items to Legendary in the Horadric Cube to fill your Aspect list, temper your gear, and level Paragon and glyphs before chasing perfect items. Patch 3.2.1 raised Legendary drop rates in Torment I through V, so this stretch is kinder than it was last season.
Blizzard notes that about 15% of Seasonal Objectives need the Lord of Hatred expansion, including what is required to finish Rank VIII. Without the expansion you can still play the season, but not complete every reward.
For veterans
- War Plans are now shared. Reputation earned on one character applies to every alt in the same partition (Seasonal or Eternal, Hardcore or not, SSF or not). Each character still places its own points.
- Rebirth needs an empty character. Move gear to the Eternal stash first; anything left equipped or in the bag is lost.
- Three fast leveling plans. wudijo's Season 15 sheet lists a Hellwyrm route in Helltide (hard, about 1.5 to 2.5 hours), an Undercity route (simple, about 2 to 2.5 hours) and a plain route that simply takes every experience reward War Plans offer (about 2.5 to 3 hours).
- Chest trick. The same notes suggest logging out in front of a Helltide chest and turning it in on Penitent for more activity experience, then dropping back.
- Helltide was trimmed slightly. Patch 3.2.1 cut the chance for Plague Maggot Young to drop experience orbs, while raising the bonus experience of Torment X to XII.
Community mood is good. One of the month's top r/diablo4 threads calls the season "a fantastic moment in Diablo history", largely for the amount of fan service packed into it.
