This Blazing Scream Warlock build guide is written for Diablo IV Season 15, Season of Hell's Legacy, on patch 3.2.2 and was checked in October 2026. Blazing Scream is the first entry on Maxroll's overall, push, speedfarm and bossing lists, and Rob2628 ranks it S on D4Builds.gg. The goal here is to explain why it is that strong, what it costs you, and whether you should commit to it.

New here? Start with this

Blazing Scream is a Warlock Core Skill you unlock at level 3. It throws a burning demon head that passes through enemies and bounces off walls and terrain. The usual variant, Skull Splitter, makes each head spit out smaller ones that also bounce. Cast a few in a row into a corridor and the room fills with ricocheting damage.

What to know before you start:

  • The Warlock has two resources. Wrath pays for normal skills. Dominance pays for Greater Demons. Managing both is the class's main learning curve.
  • Leveling is not this build's best phase. Maxroll's leveling tier list has Blazing Scream in B tier, and its leveling guide lists the need for healing and a hungry resource bar among the cons. wudijo's class ranking calls the Warlock's start slow.
  • Use the Starter variant at 70. It runs the Legion Shard and Apocalypse instead of the self-burning Demonform, which is far easier to keep alive.
  • Cheap early gear exists. Maxroll's starter setup uses two classic runewords: Stealth (Tal + Eth and a white chest armor in the Horadric Cube) and Ancient's Pledge (Ral + Ort + Tal and a white Focus).

If two resources and constant aiming sound tiring, the Apocalypse Warlock is the easier S-tier option on the same class.

How the build works

Three ideas explain the damage.

One skill wearing many tags. Maxroll's guide points out that Blazing Scream ends up as a Core, Hellfire, Demonology, Lesser Demon, Greater Demon and, with the right Unique, Archfiend skill at once. Each tag opens another multiplier, and several of them also solve problems: the Lesser Demon upgrades that come with the Archfiend tag generate Wrath and apply Vulnerable.

Permanent Demonform. The endgame version casts Metamorphosis with the Destruction Demon variant once and stays transformed. You burn yourself the whole time in exchange for much higher damage. Since 3.2.1 the variant applies burning when any skill is cast, and its Hellfire bonus went from 4% to 6%. The transformation also supplies Volatility, which the Unique Moloch's Beating Flame needs in order to empower your Hellfire skills.

Walls are a damage stat. Skulls that bounce back through a target hit again. Maxroll tells you to fire into tight corridors and, on bosses, to aim at nearby terrain so the heads return. Open ground simply gives the skulls less to bounce off.

What patch 3.2.1 changed

The season patch is the reason the build jumped from strong to best:

  • Elegy now makes Blazing Scream an Archfiend Skill, raises its bonus from 20-30% to 30-50%, makes the small skulls hit as hard as the main one, and stops skulls from vanishing when they hit a wall.
  • Infernal Homunculus went from 50-70% to 80-110% Archfiend damage, and casting any Archfiend Skill now switches on all their Lesser Demon upgrades for free.
  • Brimstone Hunger, a Blazing Scream upgrade, had its bonus cap doubled from 25% to 50%.
  • Hand of Apotheosis now grants every Metamorphosis upgrade in any Demonform, at 50-100% extra potency.
  • A new glyph, Superiority, boosts Magic nodes and adds 10% Damage Reduction. It is first in Maxroll's glyph order.

Elegy and Infernal Homunculus only make sense together. Maxroll is explicit that you should not equip the Homunculus before you own an Elegy.

Gear order and stat targets

What each variant needs before you switch to it

For the Endgame variant Maxroll's Mythic priority is Moloch's Beating Flame, Temerity, Leoric's Crown, Elegy, then Infernal Homunculus. The stat targets are blunt: 100% Attack Speed, 100% Critical Strike Chance, more than 10 Wrath Regeneration, more than 10,000 Fire Resistance, and Maximum Life on nearly every piece.

Survival comes from overhealing. Sadistic Aspect and Undying Aspect heal you, and Temerity turns the excess into Barrier. The guide adds the Que rune for extra Barrier and Lac for Damage Reduction, and Raheir as the mercenary.

Soul Splinters go into Leoric's Crown: Black Soulstone (its kill-streak bonus is triggered by the small skulls), Anguish for Attack Speed and Crit, and Pain for toughness, with Mother to cancel Pain's movement penalty. If Anguish wrecks your Wrath, swap to Hellfire.

One trap: Maxroll says a non-Mythic Hand of Apotheosis is weaker than a good Aspect of Ignition in that slot. Only wear the gloves once you have the Mythic version.

Strengths and weaknesses

Strengths, from Maxroll's guide and the tier lists:

  • Top tier in every activity, so one character does everything.
  • Very mobile once Command Abodian, Rampage with the Anathema of the Primes charm, or the Enigma runeword's Teleport are in place.
  • The endgame version grows naturally out of the leveling version.

Weaknesses:

  • Constant casting. There is no downtime in the rotation.
  • Damage depends on aim and terrain.
  • Two resources, and Anguish can make Wrath unmanageable early.
  • You are permanently on fire. Until healing and Barrier are sorted, the build kills itself.
  • The full version leans on five specific Uniques, ideally as Mythics.

Recent r/diablo4 threads show where players get stuck. One reports melting Torment 12 bosses in seconds and still dying to a single falling sword or on-death explosion; another asks how other Warlocks seem to have endless Wrath. Both are the listed weaknesses in practice: fix Life, Barrier and Wrath income before chasing more damage.

For veterans

  • Speedfarm variant: swap the chest for Enigma to get Teleport on Evade, and Lac for the Tir rune to automate Wrath on kill.
  • Push variant: Maxroll's October 1 rewrite drops Command Abodian, runs Enigma for movement, Ber for Crushing Blow and Tir for resource, adds Bombardment between packs to keep a five-stack buff, and trades the Superiority glyph for Control. The guide warns it dies far more easily.
  • Dominion and Profane Sentinel. In Maxroll's Tower recap, Roxy says swapping in the Dominion board with Profane Sentinel let her drop resource tempers from jewelry and ramp faster. She also replaced Hand of Apotheosis with Legendary gloves carrying the Ominous Aspect to need one less Mythic.
  • The charm interaction. The Push variant uses the Hellfire Torch behaviour that allows a five-piece set bonus plus two Unique Charms. Blizzard's forum statement says it is unintended but will not be changed this season, so leaderboard runs assume it.
  • Tower results. MacroBioBoi reports multiple Warlock builds clearing Tower 150, and wudijo cleared 150 on Hardcore on a character he had played for only a few days, without the charm setup.
  • Hellfire Torch choice. If you find one, the guide prefers the version tied to the Phoba of Abaddon's Flesh set.

Who should play it

Play Blazing Scream if you want the strongest all-round character this season and enjoy an active, twitchy playstyle. Skip it if you want a relaxed farmer, play mostly in open areas such as Helltide, or dislike gear chases that hinge on several specific Uniques.
