MapleStory Beginner Guide 2026: How to Start in GMS v.271

This MapleStory beginner guide 2026 is written for Global MapleStory (GMS) v.271, "MapleStory x Frieren: Beyond Journey's End", which went live on September 9, 2026. Everything below was checked in October 2026 against the official patch notes and current community resources. The short version: v.271 quietly made the road from Lv. 210 to 260 much shorter, the gear hand-outs from summer are still open until November 10, and the one thing you cannot do right now is Hyper Burn a character.
New here? Start with this
MapleStory is a side-scrolling MMO where you level one character, then build an account around it. Three decisions matter on day one.
- Pick a world type. Heroic worlds are self-found: you make your own gear and sell boss crystals for mesos. Interactive worlds have a player market. You cannot move a character between the two, so read the table below before you create anything.
- Pick a class you like the look of. Grandis Library's progression guide says it plainly: every class is weak early, and damage charts do not describe your first months. If you want a shortlist, see our round-up of strong, easy classes.
- Level to 200 before worrying about anything else. Job advancements arrive at Lv. 10, 30, 60, 100, 200 (5th job) and 260 (6th job). Dailies, bosses and gear upgrades only start to matter after the 5th job.
Heroic or Interactive: choose before you create
The megathread on r/Maplestory lists the Heroic worlds as Kronos and Hyperion and the Interactive ones as Bera and Scania; the official Auction House notes add Aurora, Elysium and Luna (EU) to the Interactive group.
What that means in practice:
- Heroic has no upgrade slots, so gear goes straight to Star Force, and Spell Traces are just vendor mesos (Grandis Library). Boss drops such as the newer boss rings are untradable there. In return, boss crystals sell for five times the Interactive value according to mason's maple matrix: Chaos Zakum alone is listed at 81.0 million mesos in Heroic.
- Interactive lets you buy gear and pets on the Auction House, which since v.260 is shared across Scania, Bera, Aurora and Elysium, and trade mesos on the Meso Market. Gear needs Spell Trace scrolling before Star Force, and the event gear there also carries Bonus Potential perks.
If you enjoy earning everything yourself, play Heroic. If you want to trade, or plan to buy your way past slow drops, play Interactive.
Levels 1 to 200: fast, and mostly automatic
Class intro quests are skippable now, and hunting maps for monsters Lv. 60 and above are instanced, so you will not fight other players for spawns. A few habits make the early levels painless:
- Use Auto Assign for stat points and max every skill; all 1st to 4th job skills can be maxed.
- Star Force every slot to around 10 at 4th job. The 5th job quest requires 100 total Star Force and 10 on your weapon (Grandis Library).
- Do Monster Park. Since v.269 a world gets 14 clears a day, up to 7 per character, and the first two are free.
- Log out when you are done. After 24 hours away the game now hands you a 3x EXP coupon (15 min), up to five of them after 120 hours.
jojeejee's video is a good companion for this stretch; its chapters walk through character basics, EXP, early mesos, gear and Legion in about 16 minutes.
Level 200: the three things to do immediately
5th job and symbols. After advancing, complete "A Greater Power" to get your first Arcane Symbol, then keep doing the Arcane River dailies. v.271 doubled the payout: 40 symbols per daily and 80 per weekly quest in every Arcane River area, and symbols now merge into the equipped one automatically.
V Matrix. It was rebuilt in v.269. Nodestones now give V Points (1 per Nodestone, 3 per Experience Nodestone), and you spend points directly on the skills you want. A full reset costs 10 million mesos, so you cannot ruin a character by experimenting.
Item Burning Plus. This is the single biggest hand-out for a new account and it closes on November 10, 2026. Any Lv. 200+ character that has finished "A Greater Power" can claim eight pieces of Challenger equipment. The set upgrades itself as you clear stages:

| Stage | Requirement | Result (both world types) |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Lv. 210, solo Chaos Vellum | 17-Star armor and weapon |
| 3 | Lv. 225, solo Normal Lotus | 18-Star |
| 5 | Lv. 265, solo Hard Verus Hilla, 600 Challenge Crests | 19-Star armor |
| 8 | Lv. 280, solo Easy First Adversary, 1,500 Crests | 22-Star armor |
It can only be completed once per account, so put it on the character you intend to main. Practice Mode clears count, which makes the boss requirements far gentler than they look.
Arthur's Equipment Rental runs to the same date. It rents 20-Star accessories with Unique potential for two days; the first rental of each piece costs mesos (200 million in Heroic, 100 million in Interactive for the face accessory) and later ones cost Maple Points. Borrow them for the Item Burning boss stages rather than keeping them up all week.
200 to 260: shorter than it used to be
v.271's "Level-Up Flow Revamp" cut the EXP needed for Lv. 210 to 259. The reduction starts at about 8% for 210 to 214 and climbs to about 58% for 250 to 259. Grandis dailies were raised too: Cernium pays 30 Sacred Symbols a day, later regions 15.
Current events that feed this range, all Lv. 101+:
- Winter Countdown (to November 10): 15 daily check-ins for EXP coupons, VIP Boosters and growth potions, with a second gift track unlocking on November 11.
- Night Troupe: Omega Sector (to November 10): the Go Go Sidekick deployment pays Advanced EXP Vouchers, EXP Vouchers or Sol Erda Fragments, claimable three times a week until November 3.
- Luxe Sauna (to November 10): passive EXP while parked, charged with event coupons.

At 260 you unlock 6th job and Cernium, and the game becomes a bossing ladder. That is covered in our gear progression roadmap.
If you would rather learn the boss patterns with someone watching your run, that is what coaching is for.
For veterans
Things that changed since you last made a character:
- There is no Hyper Burning right now. Hyper Burning MAX and Challenger World Season 3 both ended on September 8. The megathread confirms nothing replaced them. They arrived with the June 2026 update and with the November 2025 update before it; the next major update, v.272, has a test server on October 29 to November 1. If your new character is a Legion or boss mule rather than a main, waiting a few weeks may be the efficient call.
- Link Skills are no longer one-per-character. Since v.260 the same Link Skill can be assigned to several characters and the transfer limit is gone.
- Legion ranks up by itself. v.269 removed the coin cost for ranking up.
- Flames cost mesos. v.271 lets you reset Bonus Stats for 3 million mesos per roll at Black Rebirth Flame rates and keep the better result, which makes early flame scores cheap in both world types.
- Old daily bosses lost their reflect. Zakum, Horntail, Von Leon, Pink Bean, Easy and Normal Cygnus and others no longer have attack-ignore or reflect phases, so one-shotting them on a fresh mule is safe.
