MapleStory gear progression 2026 looks different from even a year ago, and this roadmap is written for Global MapleStory v.271 (live since September 9, 2026), checked in October 2026. Three system changes reshaped the late game: Star Force now goes to 30 with no star loss on failure, flames can be rolled with mesos, and special rings were rebuilt in v.271. On top of that sits a boss ladder that now ends at Jupiter, added in July. The question for a veteran is no longer how to upgrade, but where to stop upgrading old gear and start saving for the next tier.
New here? Start with this
Gear comes in tiers, and each tier is unlocked by killing a harder set of bosses:
- Armor and weapon: event Challenger gear, then AbsoLab (Lotus and Damien), then Arcane Umbra (Lucid and Will), then Lv. 250 Eternal gear from Grandis bosses.
- Accessories: the basic Boss set, then Dawn pieces, then the rare Pitched Boss set from the hard-mode bosses between Lotus and Black Mage, then the newer Brilliant Boss pieces.
- Weapon line: Arcane Umbra weapon, then the Genesis weapon through "liberation", then the Destiny weapon.
Every piece is improved the same three ways: Star Force (stars, bought with mesos), Potential (cubes) and Bonus Stats (flames). If you are still wearing Item Burning Challenger gear, you are fine for a long time: its final stage is 22-Star armor. Duky's video on replacing burning and rental gear is the right companion at that stage.
Star Force: the rules as they stand
The v.264 revamp (November 2025) is the foundation:
- Maximum is 30 stars on Lv. 138+ equipment.
- A failed attempt no longer drops a star. The outcomes are success, maintain or destruction.
- Safeguard works up to 18 stars and costs 200% of the base price.
- A destroyed item's trace remembers how far it got: destroyed at 20 comes back at 15, at 21 or 22 comes back at 17.
v.269 added Enhancement Mode for attempts from 15 to 21 stars: four levels, each more expensive, with Level 4 setting destruction to 0%. v.271 removed the star-catching minigame and made its success bonus permanent.

Two free multipliers apply to all of it. Sunny Sunday on October 25 and November 8 gives 30% off Star Force and 30% lower destruction chance below 21 stars, and those perks apply to Enhancement Mode too.
Where to stop: 21-star Arcanes
A current r/Maplestory thread asks whether to pay for Level 4 Enhancement Mode from 21 to 22 on Arcane Umbra armor. The majority answer is to settle at 21. The reasoning from players in the late game:
- 21-star Arcanes are enough for the Grandis bosses; one commenter clears up to Normal Limbo on them, another says Hard Limbo is doable depending on HEXA and level.
- The next real jump is 21-star Eternal gear, so mesos spent pushing Arcanes are mesos not saved for Eternals.
- The damage from one more star on Lv. 200 gear is small next to fixing a bad flame.
There is dissent. Some argue Level 4 at 21 to 22 is the cheapest guaranteed step and worth it on a main with nothing else to upgrade. Both sides agree on the order: every slot to 21 first, one piece to 22 last.
If a piece does explode, v.264 gave you two repair routes. Trace Restoration fills a gauge from weekly solo boss missions, and Star Force Research turns Star Specks from hunting into Star Cores that restore set items. The same system lets you build missing Dawn and Pitched pieces from Whisper Crystals (65 Dawn or 130 Pitched crystals per item).
Flames and rings: the v.271 changes
Flames. Bonus Stats can now be reset for 3,000,000 mesos a roll at Black Rebirth Flame rates, and you choose whether to keep the old or new result. MVP Gold and above can roll three at once. Flames stopped dropping from bosses and elites, and a new Burning Rebirth Flame joined the Legion and Dojo shops. Bad flames are now a pure meso problem, and a cheap one, which is why the thread above calls flame fixing the most cost-effective Final Damage.
Special skill rings. You can now equip one active ring (Ring of Restraint or Continuous Ring, Lv. 4+) and one passive ring together; using the active ring triggers the passive one. Passive rings (Critical Damage, Totalling, Risk Taker, Weapon Jump) are capped at Lv. 4, and old Lv. 5 and 6 copies were converted with a refund of Grindstones plus 5 or 25 billion mesos through the Rewards System. Claim that refund; it is available until September 8, 2027.

The weapon line: Genesis, Destiny, and the second transcendence
Genesis liberation is a chain of eight commander missions. Since v.260 each needs a set amount of Trace of Darkness: 500 each for Von Leon, Arkarium and Magnus, then 1,000 each for Lotus, Damien, Will, Lucid and Verus Hilla, 6,500 in total. Hard Verus Hilla gives 90 a week and Hard or Extreme Black Mage 600 a month, split by party size. The Genesis Pass (30,000 NX, on sale until November 2) triples traces and expands mission parties.

Destiny is the next weapon, and v.270 added its 2nd Transcendence for Lv. 275+: three solo "Decisive Battle" fights in Destiny Mode against First Adversary, Limbo and Baldrix, costing 10,000, 12,500 and 15,000 Adversary's Determination. The reward is a weapon that can reach 25-Star Force and carries a passive of 10% Final Damage, 15% Boss Damage and 15% Ignore Defense, plus a 10-second invincibility skill.
Astra Secondary Weapon (v.270, Lv. 265+) is a Lv. 200 secondary weapon that takes Star Force. Three quests cost 10,000 Vestiges of Erion and 2,000 Traces of Battle in total and raise the star cap from 15 to 20 to 30. Vestiges come from your highest Grandis daily (65 a day from Geardock) and from boss coupons.
The Grandis ladder
What the official notes say about the two newest bosses:
- Malefic Star (June 2026, Lv. 280+, parties of 1 to 3, 400 Sacred Power on Normal and 550 on Hard) drops shards for Eternal hat, top, bottom or shoulder, plus the Blissful Nightmare ring.
- Jupiter (July 2026, Lv. 295+, after the Geardock story) drops Lingering Twisted Desire, ten of which become Eternal shoes, gloves or cape, plus the Original Sin of Pride face accessory. Geardock's Grand Sacred Symbol adds 20% damage against Jupiter at Lv. 11.
v.271 also made the middle of the ladder kinder: Normal and Hard Seren and Easy and Normal Kalos went from 5 to 8 lives, and Kaling's final phase lost roughly a quarter of its HP on every difficulty.
If a boss on this ladder is the only thing between you and the next tier, a carry for the first clears is a reasonable shortcut.
Heroic or Interactive
The roadmap is the same; the bottleneck differs. On Heroic worlds new boss drops such as Blissful Nightmare are untradable, so every piece is your own drop, and crystals (five times the Interactive value in mason's maple matrix) fund Star Force. On Interactive worlds those items are tradable until equipped, gear must be scrolled before Star Force, and Bonus Potential is an extra layer to fund.
For veterans
- Order of spending right now: fix flames with mesos, bring every slot to 21 stars, finish Astra and liberation quests that cost time rather than mesos, then save for Eternals.
- Rentals are worth about 15 million Combat Power at the mid-game mark according to one boss-mule thread. Arthur's Equipment Rental ends on November 10.
- Do not chase 22-star Arcanes on mules. The same players who run several Chaos-tier mules say they settle those mules at 21.
- Korea is already past this. Orange Mushroom's summary of the Korean Overdrive showcase describes a new Lv. 280+ boss, Bellona, with another Brilliant Boss accessory, and boss HP and time limits cut to two thirds. None of that is dated for Global yet, but it argues against overspending to squeeze out a clear that may soon be a third easier.
