The MapleStory v.271 patch notes cover the update that went live in Global MapleStory on September 9, 2026 under the name "MapleStory x Frieren: Beyond Journey's End". This review was checked in October 2026, a month in, against the official notes (last updated September 29), the known-issues page and community reaction. The collaboration got the marketing, but the changes that matter are in the systems section: faster leveling, flames for mesos, a rebuilt special ring system and a round of boss adjustments.
New here? Start with this
A MapleStory patch has two halves. Events are temporary and give free power; system changes are permanent. For v.271 the split looks like this:
- Events: the Frieren collaboration (ended October 7), Night Troupe: Omega Sector (September 30 to November 10), Winter Countdown (October 7 to November 10) and Night of the Yeti (October 14 to November 11).
- Permanent: less EXP needed from Lv. 210 to 259, more symbols from daily quests, meso flames, the ring rework, a third HEXA common node for every class, Sol Hecate skins, Geardock familiars, Spanish language support in beta and South American game channels in beta.
If you are new, the first two permanent items are the ones you will feel. The rest matters after Lv. 260.
What changed
Leveling. EXP required was cut for every level from 210 to 259, starting at about 8% and reaching about 58% for 250 to 259. Arcane River dailies now pay 40 symbols and weeklies 80; Cernium dailies pay 30 Sacred Symbols and the later Grandis regions 15. Symbols also merge into the equipped symbol automatically.
Flames. Bonus Stats can be reset with mesos: 3,000,000 per attempt, Black Rebirth Flame rates, and you choose whether to keep the old or new stats. MVP Gold and higher can roll three at once. In exchange, flames no longer drop from bosses, elites and several Monster Park boxes, and Powerful and Eternal flames left the Legion shop in favour of a new Burning Rebirth Flame.
Star Force. The star-catching minigame is gone; its success bonus is always on.
Special skill rings. This is the biggest combat change.

- Ring of Restraint: Attack at Lv. 6 down from 95% to 85%, zone about 95% larger, recast re-creates the zone.
- Continuous Ring: duration 8 to 30 seconds, no cooldown, Boss Damage at Lv. 6 down from 195% to 54%, with stats that build as you use skills.
- Critical Damage, Totalling, Risk Taker and Weapon Jump rings: now passive, maximum Lv. 4.
- A second ring slot lets you wear one active and one passive ring; using the active ring fires the passive one. Ring swapping skills were removed.
- Old Lv. 5 and 6 passive rings were set to Lv. 4 with a refund through the Rewards System: 10 Grindstones of Life and 5 billion mesos for Lv. 5, plus 20 Grindstones of Faith and 25 billion in total for Lv. 6.
Skills. Every class got a third HEXA common node, and the SHINE classes a third Erda Link skill stone. Common 5th-job skills were retuned per job: Erda Shower moved from a flat 900% to between 970% and 3,525% depending on class, and True Arachnid Reflection and Solar Crest dropped from a 250 to a 230 second cooldown. Using an Origin Skill now shortens the cooldown of your 60 to 120 second skills. Sol Hecate went the other way: Styx fell from 2,503% to 1,427% and Phlegethon from 1,627% to 735%.

Bosses.
- Chosen Seren (Normal, Hard) and Kalos (Easy, Normal): death count 5 to 8, with several patterns slowed or shrunk.
- Kaling: phase 3 HP reduced by roughly a quarter on every difficulty, but the Four Perils now only take damage in the zone you are standing in.
- Will: phase 1 HP segments 3 to 2.
- Attack-ignore and reflect patterns removed from Zakum, Horntail, Von Leon, Pink Bean, Hilla, Arkarium, Cygnus and other old bosses.
Jando's patch-notes video is a useful second opinion; the first 22 minutes go through the notes and the rest is his plan for the patch.
Who wins
- Anyone between Lv. 210 and 260. Shorter levels and double symbols compound: a returning character reaches 6th job and full Arcane Power sooner.
- Players with weak flames, on both world types. A capped cost per roll and a keep-the-better option remove the worst outcomes.
- Mid-ladder bossers. Three extra lives on Seren and Kalos are worth more than any damage buff for a first clear.
- Bowmen with birds. Phoenix, Frostprey and Shadow Raven now last 600 seconds, and Pathfinder's Raven Tempest was replaced with new Storm Rider and Tempest skills.
- South American players. The beta channels slipped from launch to September 17, but the r/Maplestory thread about them is glowing: its author reports far lower ping and says damage improved as a result.
- Mechanic got shorter action delays across several skills, and Kanna received the largest Erda Shower raise, from 900% to 3,525%.
Who loses
- Sol Hecate investment. The common HEXA skill added in June lost roughly half its damage.
- Owners of high-level passive rings. The refund is generous, but the Lv. 6 advantage is gone.
- Kaling shortcut strategies. A top post titled "RIP KALING CHEESE" marks the change to how Perils take damage.
- Lara. Sunrise Well's giant damage was cut from 890% to 440% at HEXA Lv. 30, with small raises elsewhere.
- Players who lean on event buffs. The top comment thread on this Night Troupe points out it has no combat buffs or EXP procs, and Designer EXP resets every week. Its defenders note the upside: Sol Erda Fragments every week and a one-time equipment transfer.
Several changes are neutral trades rather than nerfs. Night Lord, Night Walker, Mercedes and Kaiser each had one skill's damage lowered while gaining Final Damage for that skill during their burst buff.
Launch problems
The known-issues page lists what went wrong: cube resets were briefly disabled after Glowing Cubes misbehaved on Legendary hats, Night Lord and Ren disconnected entering Kaling phase 3 (fixed September 17), and new Erel Light characters could not start their 2nd job advancement (fixed September 18). All are resolved. Still open at the time of writing: some Ride or Die event boxes cannot be opened and will be compensated later.
For veterans
- Claim the ring refund. It sits in the Rewards System until September 8, 2027.
- Ring Polish Swap disappears in November. The notes say the feature, now 50 million mesos, will be removed in the next update.
- Polishing changed. Up to 10 Grindstones of Life at once (+10% success each, 500 million mesos each) or up to 20 Grindstones of Faith (+5% each, 1 billion each).
- The community's complaint is silence, not content. A widely upvoted thread notes there has been no Inkwell's Note since late April. Nexon America did publish an interview with Inkwell on October 2, but it is almost entirely about Classic World, whose Founder's Access began on October 6.
What comes next
Officially: v.272 is described only as the November update. The Public Test Server runs October 29 to November 1, sign-ups close October 21 at 4:00 PM PT, and Nexon says many of its changes will be previewed at MapleStory Fest on October 17. The Winter Countdown event unlocks its second reward track after a maintenance on November 11.
Unofficially: Global winter updates usually carry Korea's summer content; Grandis Library's FAQ gives the same rule of thumb for class releases. Orange Mushroom's coverage of the Korean Overdrive update lists a new class (Lethe), a new boss (Bellona), a third job-specific HEXA skill, and boss HP and time limits cut to two thirds. Players on r/Maplestory expect those 20-minute boss timers in November. None of that is confirmed for Global until Nexon says so.
