This Devourer Demon Hunter guide was checked in October 2026 against the 12.1.5 content update (October 13) for Midnight Season 2. Devourer is the newest specialization in the game, an Intellect-based mid-range caster that Demon Hunters gained with Midnight, and it is the spec Blizzard has touched most often this season: a mastery change in 12.1, buffs on September 22 and October 6, and now a talent reshuffle plus a redesign of its Void-Scarred hero tree. If you learned the spec in August, parts of what you learned stop being true this week.

New here? Start with this

Devourer has a simple loop with one demanding moment.

  • Souls and Fury. Consume is your filler; it can be cast while moving and generates Fury and Soul Fragments. Fragments drop on the ground, and Reap pulls them in instantly.
  • Void Ray is the spender. Outside your cooldown it costs 100 Fury and is a three-second channel, shortened by Haste.
  • Void Metamorphosis unlocks after you collect 50 souls. Inside it Reap becomes Cull, Consume becomes Devour, Void Ray is free but has a short cooldown, and your Fury drains until the form ends at zero.
  • Collapsing Star is the big cast inside Void Metamorphosis. It costs 30 souls, has a long cast time, slows the Fury drain while you cast, and hits very hard.

Most abilities reach 25 yards, so you stand closer than other casters. Both Void Ray and Collapsing Star root you in place; Hype, who writes Method's guide, stresses using Shift proactively rather than as a panic button.

If you want the gentlest version, play Annihilator. Hype describes its play as much the same inside and outside the cooldown: Void Ray when it is ready, Reap at four or more souls, Collapsing Star whenever you can.

The two hero trees

Annihilator revolves around Voidfall. Consume has a 35 percent chance to grant a stack and a full Void Ray channel guarantees one; at three stacks your next Reap calls down Void Meteors. Devourer's Apex talents, named Midnight, make Collapsing Star always crit, raise its crit damage and give instant access to it on entering Void Metamorphosis. Hype notes Annihilator gets better in higher keys, where packs live longer.

Void-Scarred is the Devourer version of Havoc's Fel-Scarred. Void Metamorphosis also empowers Voidblade, Hungering Slash and The Hunt, and the first cast of each empowered ability triggers a Voidsurge explosion. In patch 12.1 this produced the melee build: you dive in with Voidblade and The Hunt, weave Hungering Slash and Vengeful Retreat, and run Soul Glutton so the cooldown costs 35 souls instead of 50 and comes back far more often.

What 12.1.5 changes

This is the part older guides do not cover yet.

Collapsing Star is friendlier. It gains extra range once the cast has started, so a target stepping away no longer cancels it as easily. The five-second lockout after a cancelled cast is gone. In exchange, the Fury-drain slowdown now only lasts for roughly one and a half casts' worth of time, which closes the old trick of cancelling and recasting to stretch the form.

Talents moved. The Hunt and Eradicate left the crowded final gate for the middle of the tree. Blizzard's note calls Eradicate a key part of any build's AoE, so every build reaches it more cheaply. Soulforged Blades now adds 18 percent crit to Hungering Slash and Voidblade (was 15), and Voidpurge cuts 2.5 seconds from Void Ray's cooldown in Void Metamorphosis (was 2).

Void-Scarred is pointed back at Collapsing Star. Blizzard's developer note says outright that the tree's bonuses were discouraging players from casting it. So:

  • Demonic Intensity now makes Collapsing Star reset The Hunt, and its empowered Hunt deals 30 percent more damage.
  • Violent Transformation now resets Soul Immolation instead of The Hunt, and no longer buffs The Hunt.
  • Monster Rising grants 10 percent Intellect outside demon form (was 15) and 20 percent Collapsing Star damage (was 15).

Put next to Method's 12.1 advice, the intent is obvious. Hype's recommended melee build took Collapsing Star only to enable Rolling Torment and told you never to press it, because without the Apex talents it was a loss. After 12.1.5 your Hunt reset comes from casting it. Expect the recommended Void-Scarred builds to change, and re-import your talents rather than trusting a string from September.

Tuning timeline this season

  • Patch 12.1 (August): Mastery: Monster Within lost much of its bonus inside Void Metamorphosis and baseline damage went up, making the spec less dependent on its cooldown.
  • September 22: Collapsing Star primary-target damage up 25 percent and Consume/Devour up 8 percent, aimed by Blizzard at Annihilator's raid and single-target results.
  • October 6: Consume/Devour, Reap/Cull, Eradicate (primary target) and Collapsing Star (primary target) up 8 percent; The Hunt's initial hit and Voidblade up 10 percent. None of these apply in PvP.

Priorities that still hold

For Annihilator single target, Method's order outside the cooldown is: Reap at three Voidfall stacks, enter Void Metamorphosis when available, Void Ray, Soul Immolation if it is not running, then Consume. Inside: Collapsing Star at 35 or more stored souls, Void Ray below that or when the form is about to end, Cull at three Voidfall stacks, then Devour. In AoE, Eradicate is pressed with about ten souls on the ground.

Soul Immolation belongs outside Void Metamorphosis unless you need its heal or its self-dispel.

Stats and gear

  • Stats: Intellect, then Mastery, then Haste roughly equal to Critical Strike, with Versatility far behind. Hype suggests about 1,200 Mastery and 800 Haste as a fully geared starting point for both trees, and repeats that you should sim your own character.
  • Tier set: two pieces give Reap (at four or more souls) a 20 percent chance to make the next Consume instant and explode as a Soulburst. Four pieces make Soulburst generate two Soul Fragments and grant Moment of Craving, and Reap deals 10 percent more damage. Hype estimates the four-piece at around 20 percent damage.
  • Crafting: first a Spellbreaker's Warglaive with Hunter's Ritual Stone, then one Arcanoweave Lining piece, chosen from the three options Hype lists according to your gear. Craft a warglaive so all three specs can use it.
  • Trinkets: Gebbo's Bottomless Bag from The Lost Explorers, Freightrunner's Flask from Murder Row and Wavecaller's Seastone from Nymrissa Wavecaller. Those are also Hype's bonus-roll targets, behind Ula'tek's weapon, helm and necklace.

Strengths and weaknesses

Strengths: strong mobility through Shift, two Blur charges with Demonic Resilience, passive magic reduction, self-healing from souls, and Demon Muzzle rewarding you for interrupting in Mythic+.

Weaknesses: your two best buttons are stationary casts; a 25-yard range puts you inside many melee mechanics; and the spec has been retuned repeatedly since August. It is A tier on Method's October 5 Mythic+ list, but in our tally of Raider.IO's 100 highest runs on October 12 it appeared only twice.

For veterans

  • Smuggling. The melee build casts Voidblade and The Hunt just before Void Metamorphosis so their cooldowns reset on entry, their Devourer's Bite stacks are already on the target (12 percent per application), and Hungering Slash carries into the form as Reaper's Toll. Whether this survives depends on Violent Transformation no longer resetting The Hunt.
  • Leaving the form early. In 12.1 AoE, Hype recommended letting Void Metamorphosis drop after the second Void Ray, even standing idle, because Eradicate and Voidsurge carried the damage. He warned never to do this with a priority target alive.
  • Vengeful Retreat weaving is worth about 1 percent at most. Skip it when it would move you somewhere bad.
  • Read the room on hero trees. A forum thread from late September argued Annihilator had pulled ahead after tuning while others insisted Void-Scarred still led single target. PvP players are less happy: their objection is that a two-second interruptible cast cannot be a core arena button.
  • Races: Night Elf for Shadowmeld in Mythic+, Void Elf for the extra movement in raid; output is near identical.

Unsure what else to play? Our Season 2 tier list round-up covers the forgiving options.
