This Arms Warrior guide was checked in October 2026 for Midnight Season 2, as the 12.1.5 content update arrives on October 13. Arms is in a rare spot: S tier on both of Method's lists, Mythic+ (updated October 5) and raid, and the second most common damage dealer in the very highest keys. It also has one of the shortest priority lists in the game, which makes it a sensible choice whether this is your first melee or your fifth.

Why Arms is everywhere this season

In our count of the 100 highest Season 2 runs on Raider.IO on October 12 (all +22 or +23), Arms Warrior appeared 79 times. Only Holy Paladin and Elemental Shaman showed up more. Blizzard's September 22 tuning note said warriors were in a good state overall and only buffed Mountain Thane for Fury and Protection, and the published 12.1.5 notes contain no Arms changes at all. What you learn now should stay valid for the rest of the season.

Danwarr, who writes Method's guide and raids as a DPS warrior for Method, sums the spec up as excelling at two-target damage through Sweeping Strikes, with real AoE available through Cleave, Demolish and Bladestorm plus the Rend and Deep Wounds bleeds, usually at a noticeable cost to single-target damage.

New here? Start with this

Arms is a two-handed melee spec that plays at a measured pace. You are still pressing a button every global cooldown as long as you have Rage or a free proc, but there is no frantic resource juggling.

  • Rage comes mostly from auto attacks. Stay on your target; time away from the boss is lost Rage as well as lost hits.
  • Colossus Smash is the short damage window you line your biggest hits up with. Avatar is the longer cooldown.
  • Mortal Strike is your core hit, Overpower fills gaps, and Execute takes over on low-health targets or when a Sudden Death proc lets you use it early.
  • Rend is a bleed you keep on the target.
  • Sweeping Strikes copies your single-target attacks onto a second enemy. This one button is why the spec is so strong on two targets.

Dorki's Arms video for Mythic+ opens with a chapter telling you not to overcomplicate the spec, then spends most of its length on uptime and Sweeping Strikes, which is the right order of priorities for a new player.

The priority list

Outside Execute range, Danwarr's order is: keep Rend up, Avatar, Colossus Smash, Execute with two Sudden Death stacks, Heroic Strike when the Apex talent turns Slam into it, Mortal Strike, Execute with one Sudden Death proc, Overpower, then Slam.

In Execute range, with Executioner's Precision talented, it becomes: Heroic Strike on proc, Colossus Smash, Execute at two Sudden Death stacks (or four Executioner stacks as Slayer), Mortal Strike at two stacks of Executioner's Precision, Execute above 40 Rage, and Overpower below 40 Rage.

Openers. Slayer: Charge, Rend (or Cleave if you took both), Colossus Smash, Avatar with Execute, Bladestorm. Colossus: Charge, Rend, Avatar with Colossus Smash, Mortal Strike, Demolish.

Thanks to Anger Management, cooldowns come back fast, so the rule is to use them on cooldown unless you clearly would not get the full duration. That matters more for Avatar than for Colossus Smash.

Slayer or Colossus

Hero talent comparison based on Method's talent guide

Method publishes single-target, cleave and Mythic+ builds for both hero trees, and Danwarr is clear that neither is mandatory anywhere. Colossus typically has the better AoE and Slayer the better single target, but he says the single-target gap is closer than it has ever been, and advises playing the one you enjoy.

  • Slayer procs Slayer's Strikes that stack Executioner (3 percent Execute damage, crit chance and crit damage per stack), and consuming Sudden Death shortens Bladestorm's cooldown. In 12.1 the three-stack cap on Executioner was removed and the proc chance rose from 15 to 25 percent.
  • Colossus is built around Demolish. Its final strike applies Deep Wounds to everything hit, grants 10 percent Haste for 10 seconds and guarantees a Mortal Strike crit. In 12.1 enemies hit by Demolish deal 20 percent less damage to you, up from 10.

What changed in patch 12.1

If you played Arms in Season 1, relearn these:

  • Rend is single target again. Cleave spreads it if you talent both.
  • Ravager was redesigned. Targets it hits take 50 percent more damage from your bleeds for 12 seconds.
  • Broad Strokes now gives six Sweeping Strikes charges on every Colossus Smash, stacking up to 18. Improved Sweeping Strikes was removed.
  • Tactical Edge makes Colossus Smash grant a Sudden Death charge.
  • Bloodletting adds 5 percent crit against targets with Rend, and Mortal Strike applies Rend below 35 percent health.
  • Cleave lost 10 percent damage and Execute 15 percent, while Ignore Pain's absorb grew by 25 percent.

Stats, tier set and gear

Stats: Crit, then Haste, then Mastery, then Versatility, with the usual instruction to sim your own character. Crit is worth more to Colossus because that tree adds crit damage.

Tier set (Jade Warlord's Dominion): two pieces add 10 percent to Mortal Strike and Execute and make Slam hit enemies within eight yards of the target. Four pieces add 15 percent to Overpower, and Mortal Strike and Overpower each raise your next Slam by 20 percent, stacking five times. Danwarr calls it "a fairly boring tier set" that rewards holding stacks for a Heroic Strike proc.

Trinkets: raid trinkets beat dungeon trinkets this season. The two to want are Zul'jin's Guillotine Technique from The Coiled Altar and Voracious Heart of Ula'tek from Ula'tek. Keeper's Seething Core (Entombed Sentinels) and Blazebinder's Hoof (Ruby Life Pools) are the fallbacks.

Weapon: Maze-Roa, Warlord's Fury from The Coiled Altar is best and is listed as very rare; Vile Writhefang Glaive from Altar of Fangs is the dungeon alternative. If neither is realistic, craft a weapon early.

Crafting: Arcanoweave Lining on bracers and boots. Remember you can only wear two embellishments.

Bonus rolls: Maze-Roa and the two trinkets first, then Ula'tek's necklace and legs, then Sickening Signet of Atroxus from Voidscar Arena at +10 or higher. You can now earn two rolls a week; our gearing guide explains how.

Consumables: Flask of the Blood Knights, Potion of Recklessness and Thalassian Phoenix Oil, with Rite of the Hash'ey on the weapon.

Weaknesses to plan around

  • Rage starvation. Slayer feels it in Execute; Colossus can feel it any time procs run dry.
  • AoE costs single target. Taking Cleave and Crushing Combo means three talent points that do nothing on a boss.
  • Rot damage. Danwarr names sustained ticking damage as the kind warriors survive worst, which is where the Field Dressing talent helps.
  • Uptime dependence. A melee with Rage tied to auto attacks loses twice when forced out.
  • Raid versus key value. The best-in-slot list leans heavily on the last two raid bosses, so a dungeon-only player works with second choices.

For veterans

  • Charge weaving. Run to minimum Charge range and Charge back for 20 Rage. It helps in dry spells, but mistimed it delays auto attacks and costs more than it gives.
  • Broad Strokes sequencing. Since 12.1, Colossus Smash charges add to active Sweeping Strikes charges up to a cap of 18. The talents page of the same guide still carries the older advice that the two do not stack, so check your charge count in game before pressing Sweeping Strikes by hand.
  • Javelineer adds a three-second silence on non-player enemies hit by Shattering or Wrecking Throw. It is the pack-gathering tool warriors lacked beyond Pummel.
  • Die by the Sword on the tank. You can taunt and parry a boss with it, or Intervene the tank while it is running for the same effect without taunting. Some boss abilities cannot be parried, so know the fight first.
  • Spell Reflection is a 20 percent damage reduction for five seconds on a 25-second cooldown before you count anything it actually reflects.
  • Defensive Stance for one big hit only costs you its three-second cooldown in the stance.
  • Interpose moves 30 percent of nearby allies' damage onto you for eight seconds up to a small cap. Watch your own health when you use it.
  • Race: Tauren for Horde, Dwarf or Void Elf for Alliance, with differences too small to notice.
