Twister Gemling Legionnaire Build in PoE 2 (0.5.5): How It Really Works
A plain-language breakdown of the most played build in Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.5: the three-gem engine, why Gemling Legionnaire beats other ascendancies for it, gear checkpoints, weaknesses and who should skip it.

The Twister Gemling Legionnaire build is the defining character of Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.5: Gemling Legionnaire makes up 35.1% of the softcore Forbidden Rites characters indexed by poe.ninja, and Maxroll keeps the Twister version in S tier on its build list. This guide was checked in October 2026 and explains how the build works, not just what to copy, so you can judge whether it fits you before spending currency.
New here? Start with this
In plain terms: you spin on the spot with a spear to create a small storm, then throw a tornado through that storm. The storm multiplies the tornado, a buff called Barrage multiplies it again, and the screen fills with twisters that freeze and shatter everything.
Three practical things to know before you roll one:
- It is a Mercenary using Huntress skills. Whirling Slash and Twister are spear gems. Maxroll's guide suggests that players starting from scratch make a Huntress first, grab a spear and both gems in the first town, stash them, and then log into the Mercenary.
- It uses both weapon sets. Set one is built for Whirling Slash speed, set two for Twister damage. The guide stresses that Whirling Slash must be assigned to set one and everything else to set two.
- It has a rotation. Maxroll lists "More Than 1 Button" as a drawback. If you want a relaxed build, read our round-up of easier options instead.
The first act is the weakest part, according to the guide, so do not judge the build by its opening hours.
The engine: three gems
PoE2DB's current gem data shows why the combination scales so hard.
- Whirling Slash kicks up a Whirlwind around you with a maximum of three stages. Each use adds a stage.
- Twister consumes a Whirlwind it touches to create an additional twister and deal 80% more damage per Whirlwind stage. Twisters that pass over elemental ground or consume an elemental Whirlwind gain 50% of their damage as that element.
- Barrage empowers the next repeatable projectile spear attack to repeat two extra times, plus one more per Frenzy Charge consumed. Repeats deal 50% less damage, but each repeat is another full set of twisters.
For packs you shorten the sequence to one or two Whirling Slashes. For bosses the full version matters, and so does the rule in step five: Maxroll warns that dodge rolling out of the wind cloud before you fire Twister means starting over.
Why Gemling Legionnaire
Spirit Walkers and Deadeyes can play Twister too. The reason the ladder settled on Gemling is one notable that was reworked in patch 0.5.0. The patch notes state that Advanced Thaumaturgy now makes gem quality grant socketed skills an additional effect, and that every gem received an extra quality line you can see by holding Alt. GGG's own preview of the change said the ascendancy gains additional qualities from hundreds of skill gems.
For this build, those hidden lines happen to be exactly the right ones.
More attack speed on Whirling Slash is damage and movement at once, because the endgame version of the build travels by spinning instead of sprinting. The Barrage line is the sleeper: Maxroll's FAQ says the build can reach up to 100% chance to not consume charges by stacking it with gear and supports.
The guide's ascendancy order is Essence of Virtue (mostly a travel node), Advanced Thaumaturgy, Gem Studded and finally Integrated Efficiency. Gem Studded rewards having equal numbers of red, blue and green supports socketed, which the guide solves by parking spare supports in Spear Throw or Spear Stab.
Gear checkpoints
Maxroll's equipment notes read as a rough upgrade path:
- Levelling: armour and evasion pieces early, moving to evasion and Energy Shield from around Act 3. Look for a Winged Spear from Act 2 for the Whirling Slash set.
- The Taming. The guide calls this ring the single biggest upgrade. PoE2DB shows why: wind skills count as boosted by Ignited, Shocked and Chilled ground simultaneously, so Twister gets all three elemental bonuses without any setup. It also lets you drop Ice-Tipped Arrows from the rotation.
- Loreweave with the Polcirkeln modifier for chain-shattering map clear with Herald of Ice, or a pure evasion chest if you are dying.
- Lavianga's Spirits in the mana flask slot, paired with physical damage leeched as mana on gloves or a ring.
- Boots without movement speed. Because you move with Whirling Slash, the guide prefers evasion and life there.
- Endgame: Mageblood, and the lineage supports Rakiata's Flow and Garukhan's Resolve on Twister, which the guide describes as very expensive and very strong.
Redviles, whose version Fubgun featured in his 0.5.5 tier list, published a long video walk-through in July that includes a budget setup chapter.
Strengths, weaknesses and who should play it
Strengths. Speed first: Maxroll calls it one of the fastest builds in the game. Damage is high enough that the author recommends trading some of it for defence if you feel fragile. Min-maxing is deep, because every point of gem quality counts twice.
Weaknesses. It is not a one-button build. Single-target damage is worse without walls. Berserk drains life, so you need recovery to run it comfortably. Defence is evasion and Deflect, which means you rely on not being hit.
Play it if you enjoy fast mapping and a short combo. Skip it if you want to stand still and tank, or if you dislike weapon-swap bookkeeping.
For veterans
- Keep Whirling Slash at level 1. The guide repeats this several times; once it is your movement skill, mana cost matters more than its damage.
- Rakiata's Flow flips your debuff logic. It inverts monster resistance, so the guide tells you not to lower enemy resistance with exposure or curses once you socket it, and notes that Sacred Flame plays poorly with it.
- Berserk placement is a dial. Running it only on weapon set two costs damage but removes most of the life degeneration. Low-level Strength and Intelligence spirit gems also keep attribute requirements in check.
- Salvo is situational. Maxroll says it feels better indoors and offers Deliberation or Ice Bite II as steadier options. Olroth's Conviction on Barrage snapshots your Frenzy Charges but has poor synergy with Salvo.
- Paragon is the quality instil. The guide has you instil this hidden notable for 5% gem quality, and on a Gemling every point of quality feeds two effects per gem.
- Price the rebalance in. Patch 0.5.5 had no balance changes, and a forum feedback thread this week complains that most players are on Twister or cast-on-crit builds. An ascendancy at 35% of the ladder is an obvious candidate for the 1.0 balance pass on December 11, so treat late-league mirror-tier upgrades as a luxury.
