The best PoE 2 builds in patch 0.5.5 are the ones players had already worked out during the Runes of Aldur league, because the Forbidden Rites update of September 4, 2026 shipped without a balance pass. This round-up was checked in October 2026 against Maxroll's tier lists, poe.ninja's ladder index and creator tier lists, and it sticks to builds that are both strong and realistic to play without a huge budget.

New here? Start with this

A tier list tells you what is strong, not what you will enjoy. Before picking, decide two things: how many buttons you want to press, and whether you mind a screen full of effects.

  • If you want the simplest hands-on play, look at Supporting Fire Tactician or Hollow Form Whirling Assault Martial Artist. Maxroll labels both as close to one-button builds.
  • If you want to feel safe while learning boss fights, the Djinn Minion Disciple of Varashta is described by its Maxroll author as very tanky and needs no unique items.
  • If you want speed and are happy to learn a rotation, Twister Gemling Legionnaire is the build most of the ladder ended up on.

Whatever you choose, follow one written guide from level 1 and subscribe to it in the in-game Build Planner. Mixing two guides is the fastest way to end up with a character that does neither thing well.

What the ladder is actually playing

poe.ninja indexed 124,087 softcore Forbidden Rites characters on October 12, 2026. More than a third are one ascendancy.

Gemling Legionnaire sits at 35.1%, followed by Martial Artist at 10.3%, Disciple of Varashta at 7.6% and Spirit Walker and Oracle at 7.2% each. In Hardcore the picture shifts towards safety: Gemling drops to 21.1% and Disciple of Varashta rises to 17.2%. The older Runes of Aldur index looks different again, with Spirit Walker in front at 29.5% and Gemling at 9.5%, so a large part of the player base switched to Gemling for the fresh start. Maxroll's ascendancy tier list agrees with the top of that table, putting Gemling Legionnaire, Disciple of Varashta, Spirit Walker, Oracle, Martial Artist, Titan and Deadeye in S tier, with Ritualist and Chronomancer at the bottom.

The four S-tier picks

Twister Gemling Legionnaire. Whirling Slash builds up a whirlwind, Twister consumes it for extra tornadoes, and Barrage multiplies the result. The build even uses Whirling Slash to travel. Maxroll lists very fast mobility and enormous damage as its strengths. The costs: it is a multi-button rotation, single-target damage suffers in open areas without walls, and Act 1 is its weakest stretch. A new account also needs a Huntress first to pick up a spear and the two gems.

Djinn Minion Disciple of Varashta. A Sorceress who commands Djinns alongside skeletons and Spectres, protected by Energy Shield and block. It works from the first act with no required uniques, and Maxroll rates it very tanky with very high damage. The downsides are honest ones for a summoner: it can be button intensive, and the screen gets hard to read.

Hollow Form Whirling Assault Martial Artist. You tap Hollow Form and clones perform the whole Whirling Assault sequence for you. Maxroll calls it mostly a one-button build with well-rounded clear, damage and defences. It only starts at level 41 after two ascensions and needs the Lochtonial Caress unique, so you level as a cold quarterstaff Monk first. Visual clarity is its listed weakness.

Grim Pillars Spell Totem Oracle. Totems cast Grim Pillars and you detonate the ice crystals with Entangle. The guide promises strong damage and clear on very little gear, a defensive playstyle, and it is playable in Solo Self-Found. One warning matters this league: Grim Pillars is a Kalguuran skill, and Maxroll's guide notes it is significantly harder to obtain in Forbidden Rites, where only Expeditions provide it. It is also heavy on your PC.

Fubgun's 0.5.5 league start tier list, published three days before launch, walks through most of these with the original creators' versions: Grim Pillars, Ice Shot Deadeye, Twister Gemling, Martial Artist and more.

Four A-tier builds that are easier to live with

Minion Army Spirit Walker. A Huntress who levels with Twister or grenades, then swaps to minions after her first ascendancy in Act 2. After the second ascendancy she tames Mighty Silverfist, a unique boss from Act 3, as a companion. Few buttons and tanky once on Chaos Inoculation; the drawbacks are the non-minion early levelling and the need to tame that specific companion.

Ice Shot Deadeye. The classic bow character: freeze packs, shatter them, Snipe frozen bosses. Maxroll credits it with fast clear, solid single target and avoiding most damage through evasion and Deflect. It is weak to damage over time, and timing Snipe takes practice. It needs no uniques.

Supporting Fire Tactician. You order your minions to rain arrows on a spot; Maxroll's guide gives the skill a base radius of 14 metres. One button, excellent clear, and offence and defence both scale from Strength. You pay with crossbow levelling early and extra pressure on gear slots that must carry minion stats.

Shield Wall Warbringer. Raise walls, detonate them with warcries, Leap Slam or Sunder. Gear is easy to find and it performs on a low budget. Animations feel slow early, and Maxroll notes lower scaling in the very late endgame.

Mobalytics' video on the strongest starter for every class lands on a similar spread, including Djinn Sorceress, Ice Shot Deadeye, Whirling Assault Monk and a Spirit Walker. P4wnyhof's starter video, going by its title and description, takes a Disciple of Varashta, a Martial Artist, a Gemling and a Tactician from level 1 into Tier 15 maps.

For veterans

  • Nothing was nerfed, so nothing rotated. Maxroll's reveal summary states there are no balance changes in 0.5.5 and that balancing is slated for 1.0. Expect the December 11 patch to hit the outliers; think twice before sinking mirror-level currency into a Gemling two months before a rebalance.
  • Popularity is not price-neutral. With 35% of softcore on one ascendancy, its chase items (Maxroll names The Taming, Rakiata's Flow and Garukhan's Resolve for Twister) are contested. Off-meta ascendancies gear more cheaply. A current feedback thread on the official forum complains that most players seem to be on Twister or cast-on-crit setups.
  • Mind the league rules. Anything built on a Kalguuran skill gem, such as Grim Pillars, starts later in Forbidden Rites than it did in Runes of Aldur.
  • Hardcore reads differently. The Hardcore and Solo Self-Found indexes both move Disciple of Varashta into second place, which says more about survivability than any tier letter.
