A Disciple of Varashta build turns the Sorceress into a commander: three Djinns, a wall of skeletons and Spectres, and a thick Energy Shield. In patch 0.5.5 (Forbidden Rites) Maxroll ranks the minion version in S tier, and when this guide was checked in October 2026, poe.ninja showed the ascendancy on 7.6% of softcore characters and 17.2% of Hardcore ones. That gap is the short version of the build: it is strong, and it is safe.

New here? Start with this

You do not aim fireballs with this character. Your Djinns are summoned allies, each with command skills that you trigger. The rest of your army attacks on its own, and you support it with a curse and an offering. Maxroll's guide states that it needs no unique items to function and can be followed from the first zone.

What to do first, per that guide:

  1. Play the opening two levels as a normal Sorceress with Firebolt and Spark.
  2. Cut Volcano as your first skill gem (it is on the Primal tab, not the Elemental one), then Skeletal Sniper and Unearth from the Occult tab.
  3. Pick up or buy a Rattling Sceptre early. The guide says to take a sceptre with levels to minion skills over one without, whatever the base.
  4. After the King in the Mists in Act 1, use the Spirit gem he drops on Raging Spirits, which Volcano then summons for you.

On gear, the levelling priority is "+ to level of all Minion Skills" on sceptre, helmet and amulet, then movement speed boots, life and resistances, and Spirit on body armour or amulet so you can field more minions.

What the Djinns actually do

PoE2DB's ascendancy listing shows three Barya notables, each granting one Djinn, and three further command-skill notables behind each of them. Maxroll's class overview describes two ways to play the ascendancy: as a summoner whose Djinns deal the damage, or as a regular caster who uses them for buffs. This guide covers the first.

Table of the three Djinns, their ascendancy nodes, command skills and roles
The Djinns as used in Maxroll's minion build
  • Kelari, the Tainted Sands comes with your first ascendancy. Kelari's Deception is the main area skill; cast consecutively it deals 50% more damage. Kelari's Brutality adds single-target damage and applies Critical Weakness.
  • Ruzhan, the Blazing Sword arrives with the second ascendancy and appears when you cast a damaging spell such as Volcano or Frost Bomb. Ruzhan's Trap lays eight traps that become fire tornadoes when triggered.
  • Navira, the Last Mirage is a late option. In the Ice and Sand variant, Navira's Fracturing explodes enemies standing on chilled ground that you create with an empowered Ice Nova. GGG's Build Showcase series featured Dr3adful's fire and ice Djinn summoner, an earlier take on the same freeze-then-shatter idea.

For bosses the guide pre-casts Elemental Weakness and Pain Offering, lays traps, then alternates Kelari's two commands. ds lily's video guide, recorded shortly before 0.5 launched, has a chapter on the difference between the Djinns if you want to see them in motion.

Why it rarely dies

The defence is layered, and most of it comes from the ascendancy itself:

  • The Fourth Teaching shortens the base Energy Shield recharge delay by one second and gives 40% more recharge rate while on low Energy Shield.
  • Sacred Rituals adds 60% of your current Energy Shield to armour for physical damage reduction.
  • A Wolf Pack supported by Loyalty reduces damage taken from hits by 10%, according to Maxroll.
  • Block chance, and later Chaos Inoculation. The guide suggests taking it around level 83, once you have roughly 5,000 to 6,000 Energy Shield on pure Energy Shield bases.

One warning from the guide's FAQ: with Chaos Inoculation you cannot use anything that makes damage bypass Energy Shield. It names the Heavy Buffer notable and a mana flask modifier that removes life as examples of things that will kill you instantly.

Where the damage comes from

Two passive clusters do the heavy lifting. Gigantic Following gives Djinns 20% more damage in exchange for a 25% higher Spirit cost on other minions. Archon of Undeath with the Puppet Master nodes boosts the damage, cast speed and cooldown of Djinn command skills.

For single targets the guide binds Powered Zealot Spectres from the first Interlude; the Spark-casting one costs 55 Spirit. If their lightning is too bright for you, the FAQ offers a rare Death Knight from the Cemetery of the Eternals as a replacement.

Spirit is the real budget. Bones of Ullr (prioritise reservation efficiency) and the Prism Guardian shield are the guide's main tools, and its sample army is one to three Skeletal Clerics, the two free Skeletal Warriors from a Rattling Sceptre, a Wolf Pack, at most one Sniper and one Reaver, with everything left over going to Spectres.

Strengths, weaknesses and who should play it

Maxroll's own list is short: very tanky and very high damage on the plus side; button intensive, dependent on minions and hard to read visually on the minus side.

Play it if you want a character that can learn pinnacle bosses without one-shot anxiety, or if you play Hardcore or Solo Self-Found, where poe.ninja puts the ascendancy second. Skip it if a crowded screen bothers you or you want a one-button build. P4wnyhof included a Disciple of Varashta among the starters he took from level 1 to Tier 15 maps, which matches its reputation as a build that works on early gear.

For veterans

  • What 0.5 changed. The 0.5.0 patch notes added the Archon of Undeath cluster to the Witch and Sorceress area of the tree and cut the movement penalty on all command skills from 70% to 50%. In the same patch small Energy Shield recharge passives were reduced (faster-start nodes went from 15% to 6%), which is why The Fourth Teaching matters more than it used to.
  • Fire and Sand or Ice and Sand. After instilling Dominion you can keep Ruzhan or respec into Navira. The ice setup uses Cast on Minion Death supported by Powered by Verisium to generate infusions, so you need Runic Ward on gear; the guide puts the requirement at about 120 to 150 and tells you to avoid minion elemental resistance modifiers in that variant.
  • Baryanic Leylines swap. Trading Sacred Rituals for Baryanic Leylines with a suitable Time-Lost Sapphire is, by the author's estimate, worth 40 to 50% more Djinn damage and about 700 Energy Shield, at a real cost to physical mitigation. He considers it unnecessary unless you play without Powered Zealots.
  • Archon nodes are the engine. With Dominion the guide swaps Enduring and Resurging Archon for Invigorating and Energising Archon. A player on the official forum recently described the build's command skills falling back onto cooldowns after a respec and traced it to picking the wrong Archon notable. Check those nodes first if the character suddenly feels slow.
  • Runeforge the uniques. The guide runeforges Enfolding Dawn for defence and Bones of Ullr for an extra 5% movement speed.
  • Before 1.0. No balance changes landed in 0.5.5; a top-tier minion build is a likely subject for the December 11 pass.
