This PoE 3.29 Winter Orb build guide was checked in October 2026 on patch 3.29.3b, Curse of the Allflame. Winter Orb is the most played main skill in the league: 9,188 of the 124,386 characters on poe.ninja's ladder on October 12 use it, and Maxroll lists it first in the S tier of its league starter list. It is also a build with two lives, a cheap Elementalist start and a power charge stacking Occultist at the top end.

New here? Start with this

Winter Orb is a channelled cold spell. You hold the button, an orb appears above your head and fires projectiles at nearby enemies on its own. Channelling builds up to eight stages, each of which makes the orb fire faster and last longer; when you stop, the stages decay and the orb keeps shooting while you run. That is the whole appeal: you aim nothing and you are almost always moving.

To start one:

  1. Create a Witch and plan to ascend as Elementalist.
  2. Level with Creeping Frost, taken as the quest reward after The Siren's Cadence, and add Frostbite in Act 3 for tougher targets.
  3. Swap to Winter Orb itself around level 31. Maxroll's guide by legi plays it from that point to the endgame.
  4. After Breaking the Seal, summon golems. Maxroll takes the Lightning Golem first because it solves early mana.
  5. Path to the Bitter Frost keystone early. It is a large damage gain, but remember that it stops you dealing any non-cold damage.

No unique item is required for any of this.

Why Winter Orb leads the league

Patch 3.29 was a self-cast spell patch, and Winter Orb got more than most:

  • It fires 2-3 projectiles depending on gem level (previously 1 at every level).
  • It has a 25% chance to freeze, which it did not have before.
  • Critical strike chance is 7.5%, up from 6%.
  • Top-end damage at gem level 20 rose from 360-450 to 360-539.
  • The new Bitter Frost keystone makes chilled enemies take increased cold damage based on your chill effect. 83% of Winter Orb characters on poe.ninja take it.

Two item changes help as well. Mystic Refractor, the wand most guides use, had its projectile speed range raised to 10-50% in 3.29, and spell critical strike chance on one-handed caster weapons now rolls from 40% upwards.

How the build works

Stages and Focused Channelling. PoEDB lists 20% increased projectile frequency and 30% increased duration per stage, and cast speed also raises projectile frequency. Maxroll calls Focused Channelling the most impactful support: its damage bonus is fixed at the end of the cast and lasts until the current stages run out. The practical rule from the guide is to channel for about three seconds each time you recast, then move.

Overlapping explosions. Projectiles deal area damage and their explosions overlap, so area of effect raises both clear and single-target damage.

Herald of Ice. Frozen packs shatter in chains. Ice Bite on the herald generates frenzy charges while clearing, and Vaal Cold Snap covers frenzy charges on bosses.

The crit swap. The guide starts with Elemental Overload and drops it around level 60, once critical strike and power charge notables are allocated.

Five-step gear order for the Winter Orb build from campaign to endgame
Gear order following Maxroll's Winter Orb guide

Gear in the right order

  • Campaign: a wand with +1 to cold spell gems (check Nessa's stock in Act 1), resistances from the crafting bench, and an evasion shield for movement speed.
  • Level 34: Mystic Refractor. Maxroll says to use it only with the three additional projectiles roll and to remove Multiple Projectiles Support once you equip it.
  • Early maps: a shield with about 40% chance to block attacks, and gloves with the Eldritch implicit that inflicts cold exposure on hit.
  • Midgame: the guide's crafted Archdemon Crown is the priority upgrade and helps cap critical strike chance. Armour and energy shield bases on the other slots.
  • Endgame: The Red Nightmare and Svalinn cap block. Pearl of Tsoatha is listed as best in slot when it rolls supports such as Focused Channelling, Arcane Surge or Cold Penetration.

One warning from the guide: Eye of Malice is a strong helmet only if you always curse resistant targets with Frostbite, otherwise it can work against you.

Elementalist or Occultist?

Elementalist is the starter. Liege of the Primordial with Golem Commander gives up to four golems that re-summon themselves, Shaper of Storms makes every hit shock, Mastermind of Discord strengthens exposure and adds mana regeneration, and Heart of Destruction gives 30% more damage against unique enemies.

Occultist is where the ladder ends up: 60.5% of Winter Orb characters are Occultists and 36.4% are Elementalists, and 64.2% of all Winter Orb characters run Chaos Inoculation. Maxroll's power charge variant is built on Ralakesh's Impatience (you count as having maximum power charges), Malachai's Loop (+2 maximum power charges), Badge of the Brotherhood (maximum frenzy charges equal maximum power charges) and Willclash for spell block. The guide's own answer on timing: the variant needs Ralakesh's Impatience to be good, deals much more damage even in the midgame, and is worth an early swap if you can afford the boots and supporting gear.

Strengths and weaknesses

Maxroll's listed pros are auto-targeting, speed, strong map clear and the Herald of Ice explosions. Its cons are honest: the build relies on freezing enemies early, and it needs gear before single-target damage is comfortable. Add one from the mechanics above: Focused Channelling asks you to stand and channel for a few seconds on bosses, and Maxroll suggests Infused Channelling instead if your mana cannot sustain it.

For veterans

  • Unhallowed Rite is not the reason Occultist wins. 3.29 added that notable for channelling spells, but the most-taken Occultist passives among Winter Orb characters are still Forbidden Power (61.6%), Frigid Wake, Void Beacon and Vile Bastion.
  • Elegant Hubris is on 56.6% of Winter Orb characters. A Reddit thread in r/PathOfExileBuilds flags seed 63400 for increased energy shield, critical multiplier and frenzy generation.
  • Drop More Duration when cast speed is high enough. Maxroll replaces it with Inspiration, Cold Penetration or Arcane Surge once stages recharge comfortably.
  • Scornful Herald replaces Ice Bite on Herald of Ice once a ring covers frenzy charges on kill; it gives the herald base critical strike chance.
  • Forbidden Flame and Flesh: the guide suggests Vile Bastion or Frigid Wake on Elementalist, and Liege of the Primordial on the Occultist variant to keep golem buffs.
  • Reflect maps changed. Rare monsters with Elemental Thorns reflect a fixed 1,500 elemental damage per hit in red maps, at most once every 0.1 seconds, and it is mitigated like any other hit. A fast-hitting build should check its cold resistance and block before ignoring that modifier.
