This PoE 3.29 Luminary build guide covers the Scion's new ascendancy in Curse of the Allflame, checked in October 2026 on patch 3.29.3b. The Luminary is the most played class in the league: 23.8% of the 124,386 characters on poe.ninja's ladder on October 12. It is also the least normal build in the game, because most of your damage comes from somebody else.

Since 3.29, mercenaries from Trarthus are part of the core game. From Act 3 onwards you meet them in the world and can accept a duel. If you win, that mercenary follows you for a few areas and then leaves.

The Luminary breaks that rule. Its first notable, Noble Blood, reads "You can hire a Mercenary permanently" (PoEDB). You may keep up to three hired mercenaries, with one active in combat, and unlike other classes you can change what they wear. The whole character is then built to make that one ally stronger and to keep both of you alive.

Three things to know before you roll a Scion:

  • Do not start the league as a Luminary. Maxroll's guide levels as a regular Ascendant and swaps only when a usable mercenary has been hired.
  • The Sceptre of God, The Grand Arena, The Ridge and The Hidden Underbelly always contain a mercenary during the campaign, and so do the Control Blocks in Act 10.
  • Your mercenary scales with area level up to level 68, but the item level it can equip is capped by the area where you found it. A mercenary hired in Act 3 is a placeholder.

What the ascendancy gives you

Two details are easy to miss. First, permanent mercenaries deal less damage than temporary ones; PoEDB's stat line shows 30% less, and 3.29.1 made that penalty taper in, with none before level 45 and the full amount at level 83. Second, mercenaries cannot wear unique items at all unless you spend a point on the matching Legendary notable, and Legendary Arms adds 8% more damage for each unique equipped.

Mercenary support

This is the version behind the ladder numbers. You deal almost no damage yourself. You attach a Link skill to the mercenary and stack the two stats that feed it:

  • Life. Flame Link gives the linked target added fire damage equal to 5% of your maximum life. That is why 73.5% of Luminaries wear Kaom's Heart and 73.9% take Blood Magic.
  • Light radius. Golden Glory makes increases to light radius also increase the effect of your Link buffs on the mercenary. The Hallowed Monarch helmet (68.5% of Luminaries), the Rotmother's Mutiny amulet (68.1%) and the Nycta's Lantern sceptre (64.2%) all carry large light radius rolls.

Oath of Fealty, taken by 90.9% of Luminaries, halves the cost of Link skills, makes the link permanent and removes the usual rule that you die when your linked target dies. The Hallowed Monarch also lets Link skills target minions and makes linked minions take 65-75% less damage.

The mercenaries people hire are concentrated in three types: Kineticist (32.0% of Luminaries), Manyshot (30.0%) and Combatant (13.0%). The Kineticist is a wand user whose skill pool on PoEDB includes Kinetic Blast of Clustering and Barrage.

CaptainLance9's guide follows this route from a Righteous Fire start into a full support setup, with chapters on why Flame Link beats auras, the value of light radius and the Blood Magic swap. Zizaran published a similar support build before launch.

Facebreaker Earthshatter

Maxroll's guide by shayd, and GGG's own Build Showcase of a build by Alohaa, do the opposite: you hit, and the mercenary is the weapon. A Swiftblade mercenary uses Rallying Cry, which gives you a share of his weapon damage, while Facebreaker gloves multiply your unarmed physical damage. Loyal Bodyguard then moves 20% of hit damage onto the mercenary as long as his life is higher than yours, so Maxroll stresses keeping his maximum life above your own. Only 1.7% of ladder Luminaries use a Swiftblade, so this is the minority version, but it is the one with a complete written guide.

Strengths

  • Damage scales through a second gear set, so upgrades are available even when your own slots are finished.
  • The support version stacks life, which makes the character sturdy without any separate investment.
  • Budget versions exist. POEGuy's August setup is aimed at Simulacrums and Tier 17 maps on an affordable budget.
  • Mercenaries are easy to keep alive: Maxroll notes they regenerate roughly 20% of their life per second and need only 75% total in each resistance, because they have no resistance penalty.

Weaknesses

  • Everything depends on one mercenary. The right type, with good skills and supports, has to be found or bought as a Warrant.
  • The early game is rough. Zizaran's guide warns that the build feels weak in the early campaign, and GGG wrote after launch that many players found permanent mercenaries too weak when first entering high-tier maps.
  • You gear two characters. Six of the twelve notables listed on PoEDB do nothing except unlock one unique slot each.
  • The Valdo map modifier that cuts damage per equipped item also applies to a Luminary's mercenary.

Who should play it

Play it if you like support characters, enjoy trading for specific pieces, or want a second character that can farm hard content on a moderate budget. Skip it if this is your first character, if you play Solo Self-Found without patience for mercenary hunting, or if you want to feel your own skill land.

For veterans

  • Finding the mercenary. Since 3.29.1, Infamous mercenaries are 50% more common in Tier 1 maps, rising to about twice as common in Tier 16, and mercenary skills carry more supports in maps. A mercenary gives its Warrant only once; Warrants can be traded.
  • Scarabs. Trarthan Scarab of Infamy makes mercenaries Infamous and adds two wild ones; Trarthan Scarab of Renown makes all their equipment unique. Maxroll rates rushing mercenaries with those two as an S-tier farm.
  • The Contract Killers atlas notable makes allied mercenaries deal 100% more damage against mercenaries and Rogue Exiles, which helps a weak first mercenary win you a better one.
  • Death in maps. A revived permanent mercenary rejoins when you re-enter through a Map Device portal (3.29.1).
  • Gear quirks from Maxroll's FAQ: Eldritch implicits that require the presence of a pinnacle boss or unique enemy are always active on mercenaries.
  • Recent fixes (3.29.3): you can hire a third permanent mercenary while a temporary one is active, and mercenary Wither-on-hit supports now apply Withered for the full two seconds.
  • Research tool. poe.ninja now shows each character's mercenary with its gear and skills, as a Reddit thread pointed out.
  • Outlook. POEGuy says in his video description that he expects the archetype to be nerfed hard in 3.30. That is a creator's guess; GGG has announced nothing.
