The best PoE 3.29 builds are easy to name in October 2026, because the Curse of the Allflame ladder has had eleven weeks to settle. This round-up was checked in October 2026 on patch 3.29.3b. It combines Maxroll's League Starter Build Tier List (last updated September 19) with a poe.ninja ladder snapshot from October 12 covering 124,386 characters, and for each pick it states what the build is good at and what it costs you.
New here? Start with this
A build in Path of Exile is one main skill, an ascendancy class and a passive tree that all push in the same direction. Your class is fixed when you create the character and your ascendancy is chosen in the Labyrinth during the campaign, so decide before you start. Three simple rules:
- Take a build with a complete written guide, and follow it to the letter on your first character.
- Prefer builds that need no unique items. They are stronger than they look on paper because nothing blocks you.
- Skills that aim themselves (orbs, totems, minions) leave your hands free for dodging.
If that is all you want: play Winter Orb Elementalist. Maxroll's guide lets you use the final skill from level 31 and requires no unique item.
The eight picks at a glance
| Build | Ascendancy | Maxroll tier | Best at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter Orb | Elementalist or Occultist | S | Fast, safe map clearing |
| Mercenary support | Luminary (Scion) | S (guide pending at list time) | Letting a mercenary carry |
| Righteous Fire | Chieftain | not listed | Relaxed mapping |
| Kinetic Fusillade Ballista | Hierophant | S | Bosses on a budget |
| Smite of Divine Judgement | Inquisitor | S | Balanced melee |
| Storm Burst of Repulsion Totem | Hierophant | S | Solo Self-Found starts |
| Carrion Golems and Zombies | Necromancer | A | All-round minions |
| Earthshatter | Slayer | A | Tanky, cheap slams |
What each build really offers
Winter Orb. The most played main skill on the ladder at 7.4% of characters. Patch 3.29 raised it from one projectile to two or three, added a 25% chance to freeze and lifted its critical strike chance to 7.5%. Maxroll lists auto-targeting, speed and Herald of Ice chain explosions as strengths. The listed weaknesses are that it depends on freezing enemies early and needs gear before single-target damage is good.
Luminary mercenary support. The new Scion ascendancy is the most played class in the league: 23.8% of the ladder. You hire a mercenary permanently, equip it yourself and buff it. The weakness is dependence. Zizaran's launch-week guide lists a chapter called "This build will feel weak in early campaign", and Maxroll's Luminary guide levels as a normal Ascendant and only swaps once a usable mercenary has been found.

Righteous Fire Chieftain. Righteous Fire is the second most played skill (4.7%), and 94% of those characters are Chieftains. The gem deals 70% of your maximum life as fire damage per second around you, so every point of life is also damage. The cost is on the gem as well: you burn for 90% of your maximum life per second, so the build cannot be switched on until recovery and fire resistance are in place. Pohx's league-start video is the reference guide.
Kinetic Fusillade Ballista. Palsteron's guide on Maxroll calls it easy to gear and good at bosses because the totems fight from range, with no unique items needed. Its listed cons are the totem playstyle and modest toughness. Note that 3.29 cut the skill's attack speed from 200% to 125% of base and made Ballista Totem Support deal less damage, yet it stayed in S tier.
Smite of Divine Judgement Inquisitor. A melee strike with a large area that can hit twice. Maxroll lists block, clear speed, layered defences and strong recovery, and says the endgame version reaches a combined life and energy shield pool above 12,000. Cons: it is melee, the skill is a transfigured gem (you level with Static Strike, then farm the Merciless Labyrinth or buy it), and some uniques may be expensive.

Storm Burst of Repulsion Totem. Four spell totems fill the screen and you re-summon them to detonate the orbs on bosses. Maxroll calls it a smooth league start that works in Solo Self-Found, playable from about level 31 with no gear. Cons: fragile until block is scaled, and totems limit clear speed. Spell Totem Support's damage penalty also grew in 3.29, to 55-50% less from 49-40%.
Carrion Golems and Zombies Necromancer. Maxroll describes it as a powerful all-round minion build. Patch 3.29 removed the pause between attacks for all non-spectre minions and names zombies and golems among the biggest winners. It deals poison and chaos damage, and Maxroll tags the guide for bossing and mapping but not with the endgame label it gives its S-tier builds.
Earthshatter Slayer. Maxroll's summary: very tanky, cheap and hardcore-viable, with Slayer adding area and recovery through overleech. Earthshatter leaves spikes that explode when you use a warcry, so it has a two-button rhythm, and you fight in melee range.
Spicysushi PoE's 3.29 starter tier list covers most of the same names (Righteous Fire Chieftain, Winter Orb, both totem builds and the Luminary), which is a useful second opinion from the launch week.
Which one should you play?
- First character ever: Winter Orb Elementalist or Storm Burst totems.
- You hate dying: Earthshatter Slayer or Smite Inquisitor.
- You want to press as few buttons as possible: Righteous Fire Chieftain or the minion Necromancer.
- You want the league's signature build: Luminary, but start it as a second character or accept a slow first day.
- You mainly want to kill bosses cheaply: Kinetic Fusillade Ballista.
If you would like a tree and gear plan checked against your own budget, that is what a build review is for.
For veterans
The ladder and the starter lists disagree in ways worth knowing.
- Winter Orb at the top end is an Occultist, not an Elementalist. 60.5% of Winter Orb characters on poe.ninja are Occultists against 36.4% Elementalists, and 83% of them take the new Bitter Frost keystone.
- The ladder is skewed towards rich characters. 43.8% of Luminaries wear a Mageblood. Use poe.ninja to see where a build ends, not what it costs to start.
- Elementalist is carried by more than one skill. Winter Orb (19.2% of Elementalists), Penance Brand (15.9%) and Ethereal Knives (14.0%) lead it. Physical spells gained critical strike chance in 3.29: Ethereal Knives went from 6% to 10%.
- Flicker Strike is mostly a Slayer build now (54% of Flicker characters), with Berserker at 16%.
- Nerfed does not mean dead. Archmage Support now adds 8-14% of unreserved mana as lightning damage (from 10-16%) and Elemental Hit lost 17% of its added damage, but both still have guides on Maxroll's list.
- Energy Blade now requires every equipped weapon to be a sword. Check older Smite and Energy Blade trees before copying them.
